rComplex is not actually a complex game. rComplex is actually a remake of a 2009, redesigned for iOS. It follows a formula that we’ve seen with games like Canabalt and Monster Dash, but goes for a unique and fun twist – you’re being chased and must run for your life!

Playing the game has a real sense of purpose. Rather than just running for the sake of running, You don’t know who you are, but are being relentlessly chased by the tentacles and slowly recovering your memory in cube form along the way, in the darkness. The world is bathed in red, with a city in the distance of a blue. It’s a stark contrast as you and the creature following you are black silhouettes. It’s a very visually striking world that demands your attention. Sound is haunting and exciting that benefits from using your headphones.

The amount of depth within rComplex is refreshing. You’re running, then must dodge obstacles in one of two ways. Either you come across green obstacles you must jump over with a simple swipe up or blue obstacles with a swipe down. Perform these successfully and over time you’ll earn Zen in which you run even faster, leaving the creature in your dust. Should you trip while in Zen or not, the monster catches up to you. If you slow down enough to get grabbed, you are armed with a shotgun and a scythe. If caught, you can escape with your scythe. And if he gets close, you can fire your limited number of rounds to push back the beast. Run out of either, be sure you don’t trip or your memory recollection comes to a grinding halt.

Eventually you’ll earn a Motorcycle in a change of pace and progression and be able to go at faster speeds to out…drive the beast. It’s exciting to have a faster mode of transportation than just your feet. The game is all about progression and has great pacing. Even the controls are responsive and any mistakes made feel that of my own accord.

At the end of a level you are scored on your performance, from overall time, times fallen, shots fired, etc. In order to end a level, you must collect all the memory cubes that the beginning of the level tells you. If you fall short of that, you start over. And depending on how you did, certain achievements are rewarded. I will say, seeing “NO ACHIEVEMENTS” is upsetting when you think you performed well. The cliche “easy to play, hard to master” fits perfectly here.

rComplex is diverse, colorful, bright, and has addictive gameplay. The first few levels are at a slower speed than I’d like – but once you get going, it’s hard to stop. Zen mode makes the entire Canabalt-esque experience much more enjoyable and ramps up faster as long as you can maintain perfection. If you’re looking for something different and yet familiar, you should own rComplex.
