The Mystery of the Mooil Rig is out now for Sunset Overdrive

Once you’ve downloaded The Mystery of the Mooil Rig (and once you’ve completed the “A New Friend” mission in the main game), you’ll find a new mission notification on the map directing you to the FizzCo internet cafe. From there, you’ll be tasked with tracking down an old friend before navigating the deep blue sea to investigate a distress signal emanating from an offshore rig owned by the shadowy Mooil corporation. Honestly, we don’t want to talk about the story much for fear of spoilers, except to say that it’s just as exciting and over-the-top as you’ve come to expect from the team at Insomniac Games.

While there are several hours’ worth of new story and side missions sporting a nice wide variety of objectives (take note, fetch quest haters!), that’s far from everything The Mystery of the Mooil Rig has to offer. In addition to some new weapons, amps, and vanity items, you’ll also find a full Chaos Squad mission and a Night Defense base, as well as a bunch of oil-slicked baddies that show the dark side of what happens when you try to make an Overcharge-with-a-splash-of-crude cocktail. And don’t even get us started on the epic new boss. What, you didn’t expect a multi-story monster at the end of this thing?

In addition to all of the, um, additions in The Mystery of the Mooil Rig, there’s one element that needs to be called out for its awesomeness: the new water traversal mechanics. As was the case with Sunset Overdrive, you’ll still be able to momentarily glide across the water with a quick tap of the X button before touching down. However, once you’re sliding across the water, you’ll have some new moves at your disposal, including the ability to dive under the water and launch yourself into the air. These new moves succeed in making you feel more powerful than ever, even when you’re getting your tootsies wet.

Finally, for the achievement hunters out there, The Mystery of the Mooil Rig will feature a bunch of new achievements, including a special one from your friends at Insomniac Games. Starting today, hop into Chaos Squad for a chance to be matched up with a developer (they’ll be the one with the gasmask next to their gamertag). If you beat the dev, you’ll win the “Beat the Dev” achievement that’s worth 25 Gamerscore, an exclusive in-game shirt and a gas mask icon next to your gamertag. If you beat that player, you’ll also unlock the shirt, achievement and icon. And if you beat the previous winner… well, you get the picture.
