After seeing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5, I got to my hands-on with Transformers Devastation from Platinum Games. If you’ve seen the original G1 series, or the IDW reboot comic series, you’ll be right at home. It’s very much a Platinum Game, whatever that means to you.
The game takes place on New Cybertron where of course there is conflict, but while Megatron is in the game, Devastator is the main man of choice, given the game’s namesake. Transformers Devastation features 5 playable characters such as Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Grimlock, and SideSwipe.
This is purely a singleplayer game, as it is what Platinum Games does best. The developers showed us select levels, with a ton of variety between navigation and on-foot combat while in robot form. They’ve made transformations a meaningful part of the game. You can now use vehicle attacks when you’re prompted on-screen to do massive damage. As melee focused as the game is, you can shoot or aim your gun for precise shots.
Platinum Games even showed off a turret sequence, but what followed eschewed the trends that we’ve seen in other games by making it something unique and fun. This turret sequence was something out of Galaga.
There are also treasure chests that can be found around the world, these have drops that will allow you to upgrade and do more damage with your weapons.
Transformers Devastation from Platinum Games is incredibly stylized to match the 80s cartoon, is combo-focused like all good Platinum Games are, and is going to please fans old and new. This is one to watch out for, as it will likely be the best Transformers games in recent memory.
