Karlstad, Sweden – November 20, 2025 – Clear River Games, a video game publisher specialising in classic and retro games, today announced that the seminal shoot-em-up R-Type Delta HD Boosted is now available via digital download on Nintendo® Switch™, PS4™, PS5™, Xbox and PC.
Developed by Tokyo-based City Connection Co. Ltd., in association with IREM SOFTWARE ENGINEERING, responsible for the original game, R-Type Delta originally launched in 1998 on PlayStation®. It’s been a torturous 27 year wait for fans pining to blast back into orbit and take the fight to the Bydo Empire, but now, finally, the long-awaited 3D masterpiece is back on modern gaming platforms, re-armed, re-loaded and ready for battle!
Treating such a classic with the reverence it deserves, R-Type Delta HD Boosted has received a well-deserved polish for 2025, complete with updated HD visuals, a new opening movie, a remixed soundtrack, and a variety of quality-of-life features.
Setting the tone for those brushing up on their R-Type mythology: In the year 2163, having triumphed over the Bydo Empire, the R9 has been recovered and safely stored within a space fortress orbiting Earth. Humanity can’t catch a break however, as in 2164 chaos reigns supreme when unidentified objects fall from the sky, electronic weapons systems malfunction, and an ‘annihilation unit’ stored alongside the R9 suddenly goes berserk, descending to Earth and beginning a wave of destruction. Quite the dilemma for sure, and one which results in the ‘R9 Delta’ prototype test unit being deployed, marking the beginning of a new battle against the nefarious Bydo.
Business as usual for shooter fans perhaps, but now running in silky smooth 60fps and with the option to dynamically switch between original graphics and HD visuals, R-Type Delta HD Boosted features a wealth of options and new additions catering to modern gamers.
The highly-regarded soundtrack receives newly arranged compositions from Masahiko Ishida (R-Type II), as well as USP (R-Type Delta) and Chris Hülsbeck (R-Type for C64 and Amiga), and gamers can now adjust screen size, choose between multiple difficulty settings, and even access an all-new practice mode to hone their skills before facing down the Bydo Empire for real.
