From Press Release:
Butterscotch Shenanigans continues to build Crashlands 2 with its community, not just for it
Crashlands 2 launched to a warm welcome, but also sparked thoughtful feedback from longtime fans. While the sequel had heart, many players left feedback that they wanted more from the game, and to bring back some of the systems and ideas that made Crashlands 1 feel so special.
Rather than stick to a fixed roadmap, Butterscotch Shenanigans leaned into the feedback. Player input has always been part of the creative process, not treated as criticism, but embraced as collaboration and creative fuel. That community-first mindset continues to shape the game’s evolution.
Since its launch, updates have steadily reintroduced and refined fan-favorite features. Update 1.1 brought back randomized armor enchantments (a cornerstone of the original’s replayability), smarter pet combat, and began smoothing out the early-game flow. With Update 1.2, “The Hardcore Scramble”, the studio doubles down.
The new update adds roguelike-inspired mechanics: a hardcore mode, randomized game progression, and fully customizable difficulty. It’s a shift that deepens replayability and opens the door to a more challenge-driven audience.
What’s New in Update 1.2: The Hardcore Scramble?
This update reimagines how you play Crashlands 2:
-
Scramble Mode shuffles equipment, pets, and world progression, so every run is unpredictable.
-
Hardcore Mode introduces a permadeath challenge with scoring and leaderboard tracking.
-
Custom Mode offers full control with gameplay sliders. Go Godmode, full Creative, or build your ideal Roguelike setup.
You can even mix mutators for more chaos, replayability, and challenge.
More Highlights:
-
A new creature in the Aquadunes and three new pets
-
Expanded base-building with Bureau buildings, garden plots, docks, and creature statues
-
A more streamlined opening that gets players into the fun faster
-
Ongoing Compendium updates and crafting QOL improvements
These aren’t just throwbacks, they’ve been rebuilt with intent, adding depth and longevity. It’s another step in how Butterscotch Shenanigans continues building with its players.
“When we first started development of Crashlands 2, we had a specific vision of what we wanted to create. But now that game has launched, it belongs to the players. So our goal now is to listen to what they would like to see added to the game going forward, and then bring their vision to life.”
– Seth Coster, Co-Designer of Crashlands 2
In a landscape full of routine patches, this one stands out: player-driven, deliberate, and made to last.
Crashlands 2 may have been out for a while, but this is the update that gives it new momentum, and makes it worth a second look.
Update 1.2 goes live today, June 24, around 10 AM CST.
