May 14, 2013

UPDATE: It appears that the PDF novel and associated DLC may not be available Steam users outside the North America region.

Prior to the release of Metro: Last Light, I was looking through my DLC tab and nothing was there. I restarted Steam today, and while I was looking  for something else, this caught my eye:

It isn’t explained to you, but if you navigate to where Steam is installed:

/Steam/steamapps/common/Metro Last Light/novel/

You’ll see the file: Metro 2033 – English text.pdf

Go ahead and copy it out to read on your PC, phone, or other devices. If it didn’t work for you, the DLC can be downloaded (for free), at: http://store.steampowered.com/app/43163/

Metro: Last Light Review

May 14, 2013

Dmitry Glukhovsky’s book, Metro 2033 was the inspiration of the 2010 game of the same name. Also drawing from Metro 2033 is Metro: Last Light, which does not relate to Metro 2034 novel sequel. You again play as Artyom, a Ranger who is trying to find “The Dark One” who may hold answers to their questions. Along the way is tension, action, betrayal, and loyalty. If you didn’t happen to play the first game, the opening cinematic of Last Light does a good job of catching you up.

CCP Launches DUST 514 on PlayStation 3

May 14, 2013

CCP Games, the leading independent developer of massively multiplayer games, today launched DUST 514, the world’s first free-to-play, multiplayer first-person shooter on a console. The battle for dominance of the EVE Universe escalates to new heights today as DUST mercenaries forge their paths to fame and fortune in a PlayStation 3 exclusive.

Launch is only the beginning of the journey for DUST 514 players. As with CCP’s first game, EVE Online, DUST 514 is an ever-evolving game as a service, built on the technical foundation and experience CCP has gathered over the past decade. New features, content, and upgrades are planned for years to come, beginning with an update in June and additional major releases throughout 2013. All updates to DUST 514 come at no cost, truly keeping the game free-to-play for all players.

DUST 514 has been forged by the willpower and skills of the players who have joined us on the journey to launch, and the talent and determination of our development teams around the world,” said CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson. “We are now poised for the next phase of development of DUST 514 and the EVE Universe. We are off to a fantastic start, and ahead is the opportunity to expand even further what games can become. After a decade of preparing for this moment, we will at last see the emerging society of DUST players begin to fight gun-and-grenade for planetary dominance, alongside their EVE Onlinebrethren. For all we have done so far, our best moments are yet to come.”

DUST 514 is a new breed of first-person shooter, which in addition to tight gunplay features a path to unlimited dropsuit fittings and customization options, taking the player to new dimensions of character progression. The end result is a unique tactical advantage that will allow mercenaries to push DUST 514 beyond the bounds set by the game’s creators, and arm them with the ability to impact their war on a galactic scale.

DUST 514 is also fully integrated with the notorious sci-fi setting of EVE Online, a massive game universe that recently surpassed a half-million subscribers worldwide and which has been growing and expanding for a decade. Together, DUST 514 and EVE Online offer a combined sandbox of unprecedented intergalactic scale, with the outcome of ground battles impacting the persistent universe of EVE and shifting the tide of war for legions of participants. Mercenaries can gain advantage by coordinating with starship pilots in EVE Online, calling in devastating orbital strikes against opposing squads.

The fortunes of DUST 514 players will rise and fall as they align themselves with like-minded warriors to make their mark across the EVE Universe. Players join forces with their fellow DUST mercenaries andEVE Online capsuleers to form player-run corporations and alliances, conquer planets and solar systems one battle at a time, and claim their own pieces of New Eden to serve the greater good – or their own ambitions!

Coinciding with the launch of DUST 514, CCP will be offering three new item bundles on the PSN Store and the Sony Entertainment Network Store:

  • Mercenary Pack – An updated version of the popular open beta bundle that includes 40,000 Aurum to spend in-game, a 30-day skill booster (+50%), and exclusive gear.  ($19.99 / £15.99 / €19.99)
  • Veteran Pack – Comes with dropsuits, boosters, 100,000 Aurum, a permanent Blood Raider Acolyte vehicle, a deadly sniper rifle, and more. ($49.99 / £39.99 / €49.99)
  • Elite Pack – The ultimate in mercenary preparedness, the Elite Pack offers 200,000 Aurum, boosters, four dropsuits, multiple weapons, a permanent light attack vehicle, and a collection of Heavy Assault Vehicles. ($99.99 / £84.99 / €99.99)

The uprising of DUST 514’s mercenaries has begun, and their impact will leave New Eden forever altered.

Boris Salchow scores upcoming Insomniac Games’ FUSE

May 14, 2013

Composer Boris Salchow (Resistance 2 & 3,Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time) swaps his baton and orchestra for Moog synthesizers and rare vintage audio processors as he reunites with Insomniac Games to score their new sci-fi video game FUSE published by Electronic Arts. FUSE thrusts players into the roles of four elite, covert agents each with their own Xenotech weapon and set of unique skills used to fight to protect mankind from a deadly alien energy source known as FUSE. Salchow’s original score blends analog electronic elements, adrenaline infused drums and musical sound design to provide a foreboding and rousing sonic landscape for FUSE‘s dark futuristic setting and intense co-op action experience.  FUSE will be released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on May 28 in North America and May 31 in Europe.

German-born composer Boris Salchow is classically trained but just at home in the electronic music world. Combining these two worlds he began his scoring career writing commercials, promos and prime time television series for leading networks in Germany. Now based in Los Angeles Salchow has composed for feature films and video games including the internationally-released action thriller 80 Minutes, additional music for Elsewhere, and additional music for the Sony/Screen Gems’ teenage horror mystery Prom Night.  Salchow ‘s music can also be heard in Ubisoft’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, Sony’s Resistance 2Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time, and Resistance 3. Salchow continues to write music for commercials, promos and trailers for some of the most prestigious brands in the world including Adidas, Audi, and Lamborghini.

Recently Salchow scored the feature film adaptation of the award-winning documentary series Germany From Above (Buena Vista International) recorded with a 70-piece orchestra and mixed at Babelsberg Studios in Berlin.  This visually stunning film is comprised of breathtaking aerial shots of Germany.  With only a few words from the narrator, the movie provided a unique opportunity to take the audience on an inspiring musical journey befitting the film’s grand scale. Germany From Above premiered with a special event at Germany’s largest movie theater, where Boris’ 90-minute score was performed live along with the film.  For more information on Boris Salchow, please visit www.borissalchow.com.

[box_light]FUSE is a four-person co-op, story-driven, action game that allows even solo players to experience the unique attributes of each agent by using the game’s LEAP feature – a feature that can be used to switch the player between the four characters at-will during combat.  Each covert agent is equipped with unique skills and weapons that are not only necessary for survival, but also help create unexpected and extraordinary results. Xenotech weapons are powered by a volatile alien substance that gives players unique capabilities that expand their strategic options in and out of combat.  Through lethal teamwork, players can complete objectives and kills to earn Fuse points for powerful upgrades. Players can also play online or offline and level up along unique character paths, allowing players to unlock more powerful Fuse-driven abilities as the game progresses. In addition, the game’s progression system is unified between different play modes, allowing players to continue improving their agents regardless of how they play.  For more information on FUSE, please visit www.fusegame.com.[/box_light]

Metro 2035 book cover revealed in Metro: Last Light

May 13, 2013

While looking around the hub town of “Venice” in Metro: Last Light, I came across a table containing the Metro series of books. Among them was the Metro 2035 book cover. It is going to follow the same story as the video game Metro: Last Light, but covering the plot and dialogue in much greater detail and length. No release date has been announced yet for Dmitry Glukhovsky’s Metro 2035.

It’ll be interesting to see if the following series of Metro games will borrow from 2034 and 2035.

Eador: Masters of the Broken World Review

May 11, 2013

Eador: Masters of the Broken World is essentially a remake of Eador: Genesis from 2009 by Snowbird Games. A game I have not played. That statement alone may get me drawn & quartered going forward. Snowbird Games is a group of veteran developers from Russia and the Ukraine, responsible for games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword. Masters of the Broken World was also successful of being greenlit on Steam.
