From Press Release:
SEATTLE, WASH. (August 20, 2024) – Rooster uses hand-drawn illustrations and 12 player-friendly mini-games to weave a story inspired by Chinese heritage and traditional Chinese art. This indie labor of love made its debut at GDC 2024, had a great showing in the most recent Wholesome Direct and Future of Games Direct, and is now heading to PAX West to reveal all new levels.
“The response has been incredibly heartwarming,” says Sasha Boersma, Co-Founder of Sticky Brain Studios. “The leads on Rooster all have Chinese or East Asian heritages, and I have to admit we weren’t sure how the world would react to a game so deeply inspired by Chinese culture. Players who share Chinese roots see their heritage celebrated, and players without those roots get to explore a (new to them) rich, vibrant tradition of art and storytelling. It’s been wonderful to watch unfold.”
Rooster’s approach to storytelling blends mini-game mechanics into the narrative, taking players on an adventure that includes a dating sim, a tower defense challenge, garden design, and more–with original music and wonderfully cute characters to meet around every corner.
“The Chinese Zodiac gave us a cast of personalities to build from,” says Deb Chanston, Rooster’s Narrative Designer. “That evolved into accompanying those characters with unique mechanics because the chapter about the dragon should feel much different from a chapter about the monkey.”
Players and press attending PAX West 2024 are invited to demo newly revealed Rooster levels at booth 2838.
