Montréal, Canada – August 26th, 2026 – Kitfox has today announced that Dwarf Fortress will get a new major update, introducing a magic system in November for PC. A teaser has been released with a first glance at the new additions.

By reimagining universes at their mythological roots, every aspect, from unique rituals and specialized workshops to mystical auras and environmental shifts, will be transformed. Enhanced by fresh pixel art and immersive audio, a new chapter is coming.
Dwarf Fortress is a construction, management, and roguelike simulation game originally created by Bay 12 Games in 2006. Set in procedurally generated fantasy worlds, it tasks players with either building and managing a thriving underground settlement in the Fortress Mode or exploring the open world as a single character in the Adventurer Mode. Every world is generated with centuries of unique history, cultures, languages, weather patterns, and individual dwarf personalities, down to their personal memories and physical bodily anatomy.
The game stands as a legendary triumph of deep systems-driven design and procedural generation. Its technical complexity inspired major titles like Minecraft, Rimworld, and Prison Architect. By focusing on sheer depth and player-emergent narrative, it altered how developers approach world-building and simulation mechanics.
“We first announced our intention to create myths and magic systems over ten years ago, and it’s fulfilling and exciting that we’re finally able to make it happen. My brother and I always said we were making a fantasy universe generator, but it hasn’t truly felt that way since the fantasy settings we made always had the same bones.”, said Tarn Adams, co-creator of Dwarf Fortress.
“Now there are different rituals, skills, workshops, environments, and items depending on what cosmology the game cooks up, and we’re just getting started. I can’t wait for people to get their hands on it and cause trouble.”
The new update will be available in November for PC. Players can follow the game on Bluesky, Youtube and Tiktok.
