Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered Review

Oct 30, 2024

Horizon Zero Dawn is one of my favorite games, and I couldn’t stop gushing about it in 2017, and has now been properly remastered for PlayStation 5 and PC. The arrival of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered heralds another NIxxes masterpiece that make it look and feel like it was released for the first time this year. This post-apocalyptic epic is not to be missed for any reason, and if you’ve somehow only played Horizon Forbidden West, you have to start at the beginning. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered more than just a remaster that the name of the game would imply, it goes overboard for what I find to be masterful work.

Slayaway Camp 2 Review

Oct 28, 2024

Remember that camp counselor you swore you’d never forgive for that poison ivy prank gone wrong? Well, buckle up, campers, because in Slayaway Camp 2, the tables have turned, and you’re the slasher with a bone (or chainsaw, depending on your preference) to pick. This sequel to the surprise 2017 indie hit, Slayaway Camp, takes everything that made the original great – the darkly comedic premise, the intuitive yet challenging puzzle mechanics, and the gloriously cheesy 80s horror aesthetic – and cranks it up to eleven. Is it wrong to laugh while brutally murdering pixelated teenagers? Probably. Is it incredibly fun? Absolutely.

[REDACTED] Review

Oct 27, 2024

Striking Distance Studios, the team behind 2022’s sci-fi survival horror The Callisto Protocol re-approaches the same universe from that game, but in an isometric roguelike in [REDACTED]. It throws players into a desolate, procedurally generated prison teeming with monstrous horrors for a surprisingly great time. While it lacks the narrative depth of its predecessor, [REDACTED] compensates with its tight gameplay loop, challenging enemies, and a lightened atmosphere set against the dark horrors that will ensure you come back for “just one more run.”

Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered Review

Oct 25, 2024

Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered is the 2011 demonic third-person shooter for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 updated for modern consoles and never-before-seen release on PC. One of the reasons it was such a big deal at the time and even now is that assembling of Creative Director Massimo Guarini, with Shinji Mikami producing, and written by Suda51 for an undeniable trio. This game has a unique blend of gunplay, demon slaying, and a heavy dose of dark humor. While Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered boasts a stylish aesthetic and a quirky protagonist, the game unfortunately struggles with uneven gameplay mechanics and a narrative that never finds its footing even 13 years later.

Botworld Odyssey Review

Oct 23, 2024

Botworld Odyssey by Featherweight Games is an open-world creature-collecting RPG, a Pokémon-like if you will. But instead of living creatures, it’s assembling and deploying a bot army. Botworld Odyssey takes you to a lighthearted post-apocalyptic world brimming with personality. Known as Botworld Adventure on mobile, Botworld Odyssey doesn’t look or feel like it. It’s emergence for Switch and Steam is a premium experience that should absolutely be played. Botworld Odyssey is charming, full of depth, and an impressive RPG that’s familiar yet a fresh take on the genre.

Shady Knight Review

Oct 22, 2024

Shady Knight from Alexey aka “cptnsigh” is one of this year’s hidden gems that deserves to be uncovered. To put it simply, this is Neon White meets Dark Messiah of Might & Magic. However, it has depth and layers beyond that reductive comparison. Shady Knight has unparalleled fluidity, a combat system to master, and gameplay loop you’ll never want to get out of.

LEGO Harry Potter Collection Review

Oct 21, 2024

For many, the Harry Potter series wasn’t just a collection of books or movies, it was a gateway to a world of magic, wonder, and a healthy dose of childhood wonder. LEGO Harry Potter Collection, a remaster of the beloved LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 which originally released in 2010 and 2011, respectively. takes players on a nostalgic romp through Hogwarts and beyond, reliving iconic moments with the charm and sharp wit that LEGO games are known for, even as later books and films got darker in tone. LEGO Harry Potter Collection is simply great, and whether it’s your first time or you’re returning to the school grounds, there’s no better time than now.

Until Dawn (2024) Review

Oct 18, 2024

Nine years ago, Until Dawn offered a unique blend of choose-your-own-adventure storytelling and cheesy teen horror. The PlayStation 4 exclusive captivated audiences with its branching narrative and the constant threat of losing your favorite (or least favorite) character to a gruesome demise. Now, in 2024, developer Ballistic Moon takes over for Supermassive Games to revisit the game in a remake for the current generation. Unfortunately, Until Dawn (2024) doesn’t justify its own existence over the unarguably superior Until Dawn (2015).

MechWarrior 5: Clans Review

Oct 16, 2024

While it might be slightly confusing, the series has been known to have multiple games bearing the same number in the game’s title, but doing very different things with the subtitle. With this, MechWarrior 5: Clans is not an expansion or DLC to MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, it is a game that stands on its own over its sandboxy predecessor. And let me tell you, MechWarrior is back in a big way. Piranha Games have made an authentic MechWarrior game that’s true to the series and befitting of the BattleTech lore. MechWarrior 5: Clans demand strategy and tactics, else you’ll be killed or go bankrupt. While it asks a lot of you, there’s nothing else like it.

Mouthwashing Review

Oct 15, 2024

Mouthwashing is game about being comfortable with the uncomfortable. The characters are complex, intriguing, and psychologically unnerving to interact with. There’s a persistent level of creep where you can’t tell truth from fiction, and the taste that’s left when the credits roll are sure to linger. Mouthwashing gave me one of my favorite experiences of the year by showing that guilt is a heavy burden, and we have to live with the choices we make; Wrong Organ’s sophomore outing operates at the varsity level.

SteelSeries Apex Pro Gen 3 Review

Oct 14, 2024

SteelSeries has been a dominant force in the mechanical keyboard arena for years, and the Apex Pro line has been a cornerstone of their success. With the release of the Apex Pro Gen 3, they’re aiming to refine the formula that made the previous generations so popular, and succeed with dramatic effect. With OmniPoint 3.0 using new Hall Effect switches, GG Quickset, and an OLED smart display, the SteelSeries Apex Pro Gen 3 reigns supreme.

Age of Mythology: Retold Review

Oct 11, 2024

For over 20 years, Age of Mythology holds a special place in many real-time strategist’s hearts, but it’s oft-forgotten when compared to the Age of Empires series. In 2014, Age of Mythology saw an “Extended Edition” that modernized it somewhat, but a proper “Definitive Edition” is what were what fans were after. Unlike the recent Age of Empires remasters, Age of Mythology: Retold is a full-on remake that warrants a higher price point that admittedly has less campaigns, but no shortage of game to play. This spin-off from the Age of Empires series brought the fantastical world of Greek, Norse, Atlantis, and Egyptian mythology to life. Age of Mythology: Retold once again recaptures the magic for a new generation, while offering veterans a return to a beloved classic with an remade look.
