Today, Ubisoft announced the development of the latest edition of its best-selling Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 franchise, Rainbow 6 Patriots. Developed by Ubisoft Montreal with the support of Ubisoft Toronto and Red Storm, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots revolves around a dynamic single-player storyline that captures the reality of modern-day terrorism and allows players to experience it from multiple characters’ perspectives. Reveal video by Ubisoft at Game Informer of concept footage: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2011/11/03/introducing-rainbow-6-patriots.aspx

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 franchise has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide and has been hailed as one of the best first-person shooter series of all time.  The games are known for depicting high-tech counter-terrorist operations set within the Tom Clancy’s game world.  With Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots, Ubisoft is building upon the success of the franchise while also taking it in a bold new direction.

“Terrorism has evolved, and so has Rainbow 6. In Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots, all the team play, tactics, and realism that fans of the series love have been coupled with an exciting new narrative direction,” said David Sears, creative director at Ubisoft. “This adds an unprecedented level of humanity that will make Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots an extremely tense and immersive experience.”

In Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots, Team Rainbow faces a new and very real threat called the “True Patriots,” a highly-trained, well-organized revolutionary group that claim the American government is irrevocably corrupted by greedy politicians and corporate special interests.  The True Patriots will do whatever it takes to reclaim their country.  Playing as Team Rainbow, players will face critical scenarios that will require them to make tough ethical decisions in order to stop this new breed of terrorists.

In addition to the immersive single-player storyline, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots will introduce a huge variety of new innovative co-op and multi-player experiences. Players will be rewarded for working as a team and mastering the game’s new features that enhance communication and tactical execution between teammates. Success will come from a mix of split-second decision making and working to coordinate attacks against the enemy.

Sep 23, 2011

Finally coming to PlayStation 3 on September 27th is Child of Eden. And now we have the Launch Trailer, which still looks just as great on PS3 as it did on Xbox 360. But I would think the entire experience will even be enhanced further with 3D.

Child of Eden thrusts the player into the center of a battle to save Project Lumi, a mission to reproduce a human personality inside Eden, the archive of all human memories. As the project nears completion, the archive is invaded by an unknown virus. The player’s mission is to save Eden from the virus, restoring hope and peace.

NHL 12 Sales Up 19%, Best First Week in Franchise History; EA Announces NHL Superstars Facebook game

Sep 20, 2011

EA Sports released some information about the sales of NHL 12 earlier today. The sales of the NHL series is rarely touted by EA, so this was an odd one for me initially. NHL 12 sold through more than 451,000 copies in it’s first week which brought in a cool $27 Million for EA Sports. While this is not necessarily a massive number for EA (Madden 12 sold over 1.4 million copies in it’s first week), its definitely a good sign for the series. Despite liking the game a lot as a hardcore player of the EA NHL series, I did feel as though for casual gamers at large that the game may have started to look long in the tooth.

Sales were also announced to be up 19% from NHL 11’s first week at retail. One has to wonder how much influence the Season Ticket program played into this, as it did give a chance for a bunch of Madden fans who wouldn’t normally buy the NHL games to try it out. Also, the return of the Winnipeg Jets may have had an impact as it immediately made last year’s game obsolete and may have brought in a whole bunch of new Jets fans to the series.

EA also announced that they are bringing NHL Superstars, a free-to-play card based game in the same vein as Madden NFL Superstars and FIFA Superstars, to Facebook next month.

Heres the full press release:

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – September 20, 2011 – Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced the record-breaking launch of NHL® 12. Based on internal estimates, NHL® 12 had its biggest launch week in franchise history with more than $27 million generated at retail worldwide.  First week unit sales of NHL® 12 were up 19 percent across Europe and North America.  The game launched Sept. 9 in Europe and Sept. 13 in North America.

EA SPORTS™ also announced that the NHL franchise will be expanding with NHL® Superstars*, a free-to-play social game on Facebook®. NHL Superstars will bring an all-new NHL experience to millions of hockey fans by enabling players to build and manage their ultimate team of professional hockey players. With dynamic and accessible gameplay, fans can compete head-to-head in games against their Facebook friends from around the world. NHL Superstars will be available in early October.

“The fan response to NHL 12 has been incredible, and we’re delighted to expand the franchise to Facebook next month,” said Andrew Wilson, Executive Vice President, EA SPORTS. “NHL 12 is our most exciting hockey game ever, with more than 300 gameplay improvements and the ability to play with some of the NHL’s greatest legends.”

Among the additional notable accomplishments for NHL® 12 since its launch on September 13 in North America and September 9 in Europe:

  • NHL® 12 sold through more than 451,000 copies at retail worldwide in its first week.
  • Fans logged more than 6.9 million online connected game sessions last week (Sept. 13-19), which marks the most online games played in one week in franchise history and 17 percent more than last year’s opening week.
  • Each day last week, an average of 86 total hours of online gameplay of NHL® 12 were played by fans – the equivalent of more than 70 full NHL seasons of action every single day.
  • NHL 12 has earned 17 review scores of 90 or better around the world, including a perfect mark from Gaming Age who said “NHL fans need to buy NHL 12 if only to play the best representation of the sport ever created.” GameTrailers proclaimed that “NHL 12 refuses to say that amazing is good enough,” while Game Informer raves “NHL 12 is strongest where it counts – on the ice.”

NHL® 12 authentically captures hockey as it is played on the ice with more than 300 gameplay refinements highlighted by three key innovations: Anticipation AI, Dynamic Goalies and the Full Contact Physics Engine. Anticipation AI takes NHL 12 to the next level as players will now intuitively determine their next move by reading and anticipating the play. With the Full Contact Physics Engine, size and strength matter. NHL12 continues to innovate by giving you true to life collisions and control over the battles around the crease. With Dynamic Goalies, goalies are live for the first time ever. Players can make contact with goalies as they crash the crease and goalies will battle through traffic in front of the net as they fight through screens to make awe-inspiring saves.

New in NHL® 12 is the introduction of legends; nine former NHL greats – including Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, and Mario Lemieux – will be integrated into the game across virtually every mode, including the all-new Be A Legend Mode. Be the next great legend in the revamped Be A Pro mode. Play as your created pro and earn every shift on the ice with stellar play, big hits, and spectacular goals as you progress towards greatness.

Original Assassin’s Creed bundled with PS3 Assassin’s Creed: Revelations

Sep 20, 2011

Ubisoft announced a special partnership with Sony Computer Entertainment offering the first PlayStation®3 players of Assassin’s Creed Revelations an opportunity to relive the beginnings of the epic Assassin’s Creed saga.

In Assassin’s Creed Revelations, master assassin Ezio traces the footsteps of his predecessor, Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad. Now, gamers will be able to go back to the beginning of the Assassin’s Creed storyline as the day one copies of Assassin’s Creed Revelations on PlayStation®3 will include a copy of the original Assassin’s Creed. Which, this makes sense given the size capabilities of a Blu-Ray and ties in more closely with Revelations than being bundled with just Assassin’s Creed II or Brotherhood – however having a two-game gap seems odd, it’s a free game and well worth your time if you jumped in on the AC series late.

Whether being introduced to the award-winning original Assassin’s Creed for the first time or going back to relive the start of the epic journey, players will be drawn into the secret war between Templars and Assassins in ancient Jerusalem. Assassin’s Creed® Revelations will be available on November 15, 2011.

For more information on Assassin’s Creed Revelations, please visit: www.assassinscreed.com and www.facebook.com/assassinscreed. Follow http://twitter.com/assassinscreed for regular updates on Assassin’s Creed Revelations.

Raptr now has 10 million registered gamers

Sep 19, 2011

Raptr (http://raptr.com), the leading social network for gamers, now has more than 10 million registered users, including more than one million daily active users.  Raptr provides a centralized hub for people to connect, share and discover content about the games they love.  Built with powerful proprietary data tracking features, Raptr delivers personalized news and content based on players’ interests and gameplay activities.

“With more than 10 million users, Raptr has become a vibrant community for gamers to share and discover a fun mix of content about the games they are passionate about.  We’re constantly adding features that enhance the Raptr community by leveraging our deep data tracking to help users get more out of their games and fuel conversation between players with similar interests,” said Dennis Fong, CEO of Raptr.  “As a result, Raptr is also in a unique position to provide developers and publishers a deeper understanding of consumer trends and habits, helping game creators connect with their consumers in meaningful ways.”

In May, Raptr launched an all-new personalized news feed allowing players to “follow” gaming topics that interest them.  We happened to be one of those Launch Partners. If you use Raptr, give us a follow there. In just three months, users have followed more than 500 thousand topics related to upcoming game launches.

Raptr analyzes more than 23 million gaming sessions and a billion minutes of gameplay each month, and is the industry’s only source for comprehensive gameplay trends and statistics across consoles and PC. Raptr partners with video game publishers who bundle Raptr’s client into their games to enhance their products with social features that increase adoption, interaction and revenue.  It also provides game developers and publishers with deep insight into player trends across titles, genres and platforms.

I really like Raptr and what they provide. It makes it easy to “show off” the games you’re playing to friends and family on Facebook and Twitter. They also have great contests and promotions such as the more recent Summer of Raptr. Xfire was popular for a while, but I see Raptr becoming the standard – it’s quite a useful tool to connect you with people of similar interests.
