Modern Naval Warfare, the “Dark Souls of Naval Simulators” launches into Steam Early Access today

From Press Release:

Today, videogame publisher Matrix Games and developer Wave Ops launch the Early Access of Modern Naval Warfare, an uncompromisingly realistic submarine simulator that places players inside the steel hull of a nuclear-powered Virginia-class attack submarine.

This is the Dark Souls of naval simulators: brutally complex, deeply realistic, and incredibly rewarding for those willing to master it. Modern Naval Warfare is not a game for everyone. It is a hardcore simulation designed for players who dream of spending hours studying a 300-page operations manual, analyzing Pacific Ocean seabed maps, and lying silently on the ocean floor while hunting enemy vessels in total darkness.

Every system aboard the submarine has been recreated with obsessive attention to detail. Sonar tracking, navigation, tactical positioning, stealth operations, and weapons deployment all require patience, coordination, and technical understanding. There are no shortcuts, no arcade mechanics, and no instant gratification, only the slow-burning tension of modern submarine warfare.

The game launches with an 18-mission single-player campaign inspired by a realistic geopolitical scenario: a large-scale naval conflict between the United States and China in the Pacific theater. Players will conduct covert reconnaissance, shadow enemy fleets, evade detection, and engage in high-risk underwater operations where a single mistake can mean destruction.

Early Access Vs Final Version

Although the game is already feature-complete in its core systems, Wave Ops and Matrix Games have chosen to release Modern Naval Warfare in Early Access due to the extraordinary complexity of the simulation. This approach will allow the team to continue refining gameplay systems, balancing mechanics, expanding content, improving the documentation and introducing additional full multiplayer ship vs ship functionality in close collaboration with the community over the coming months. Modern Naval Warfare will also support cooperative multiplayer. Each crew member can take control of a dedicated station aboard the submarine control room: one player pilots the vessel, another manages sonar operations, another handles navigation and route plotting, while others coordinate tactical systems and combat decisions.

Modern Naval Warfare is available now in Early Access on PC.
Silent running begins today.
