From Press Release:
Although Au Revoir is Invisible Studio’s first game as an established game developer, the team conducted thorough research to ensure that the title would avoid one of the common pitfalls of the point-and-click genre: the task of searching for the “hidden pixel” in order to advance the narrative.
“When we started developing a point-and-click game, we did a lot of research on games from the 1990s. We realized that many relied on items that were very well hidden — the famous ‘pixel hunt — as well as unintuitive item combinations and trial-and-error puzzles,” says producer Leonardo Pedroso.
“Since Au Revoir places a greater emphasis on the narrative, and people aren’t as accustomed to the genre anymore, we decided to modernize these elements to make the game more accessible. We looked for more intuitive solutions and more obvious uses for items so that players could progress through the investigation and the narrative — not simply because they managed to find a hidden object on the screen,” explains the producer.
The Main Inspirations for the Project
According to the studio, one of the main inspirations for the creation of Au Revoir was the classic Blade Runner (1997) by Westwood Studios. Classic titles like Silent Hill 2 and Resident Evil 2 for the original PlaySation also played a key role in the creation of puzzles and visuals that accurately capture the aesthetic of 32-bit games from the 1990s.
This also led to a fun tidbit. In one of the earliest versions of Au Revoir, the protagonist, Tristan, didn’t yet have his own distinct appearance. This led the studio to use a temporary, PSX-style model of the protagonist from Blade Runner 2049, the 2017 movie starring Ryan Gosling.
“Since Blade Runner was one of our biggest inspirations, during this phase of testing and validating the idea, we spent a lot of time playing as ‘Ryan Gosling’ while exploring the world of Au Revoir,” says producer Leonardo Pedroso.
Because Au Revoir also delves into the dilemmas of its dystopian society and features a narrative that unfolds based on players’ choices, the development team believes that fans of titles like Disco Elysium, Nobody Wants to Die, Detroit: Become Human, The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales, and The Wolf Among Us will definitely find the game appealing as well.
“We recommend Au Revoir to players who enjoy narrative adventures, mystery stories, and science fiction, as well as fans of classic point-and-click games. It’s also a great choice for anyone who appreciates the retro aesthetic inspired by ‘90s games and cyberpunk universes like Blade Runner,” says the producer.
