After five years of Early Access, viking survival game Valheim has released in full onto PC and consoles today

From Press Release:

SKÖVDE, Sweden – September 9th, 2026 – Developer Iron Gate and publisher Coffee Stain Publishing are excited to announce that their survival game Valheim is now out in 1.0 on all major platforms including PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, Linux and Mac.

The Deep North Beckons
Deep North is Valheim’s ultimate biome, wrought with ancient evils and lurking threats. This at first peaceful looking place was once inhabited by the first vikings who set foot in the tenth realm, but all signs of life have since withered away. It is a cold, hostile region that is home to gammeltroll, elakingar, barka and numerous other ancient creatures, and deep underground lies something else that is ancient, which doesn’t welcome visitors with open arms.

Deep North is approximately 2.5 times bigger than any of the previous Valheim biomes, and not just in size. From new weapons and armor to craft to a range of new tools to make and enemies to fend off, slay and conquer, players will find these vast lands of snow and ice won’t yield easily.

Adventuring Without Limits
To ensure players all over the world can adventure together no matter where they are or what platform they prefer, Valheim features full crossplay between PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, Linux and Mac devices. PC players can join their console friends (and vice versa) and take on the challenges of the tenth realm together.

A Cinematic Beginning
To establish the world of Valheim and welcome seasoned and new Vikings alike, Iron Gate have worked together with Brikk Animation to create a brand-new cinematic that will usher players into the world of Valheim, establishing the lore of this magical universe as players are carried on the wings of a Valkyrie to the ninth realm of norse mythology.

Additional cinematics will also play once players have slain key bosses throughout the game. The legend says that one more cinematic might be out there, too, but details of it have been long scattered across the winds of the Deep North. Perhaps the ghosts up north might know more?

An Early Access End
As of today, Valheim is officially released and offers a fully fleshed out, complete survival experience intended by the team at Iron Gate. On top of the Early Access version of the game that included five distinct biomes, each with its own set of weapons, crafting recipes, building pieces, enemies and a boss, Valheim has received a range of content updates, including but not limited to:

  • Hearth & Home, introducing a range of new furniture pieces, an overhauled food and stamina system and new crafting stations
  • Mistlands Biome Update that revealed a new biome shrouded in mystery and mist, bringing with it a new magic system, the friendly (?) Dvergr and a plethora of new enemies with wings and mandibles galore
  • Hildir’s Request, introducing a new vendor called Hildir, mini-bosses, a range of new clothing and armor, and adjustable difficulty settings
  • The Bog Witch, adding a new vendor into the Swamps biome, expanding the cooking and farming skills, adding a range of new tonics and draughts and fleshing out existing biomes with new ingredients
  • Ashlands Biome Update that thrust players into the most violent biome yet against an onslaught of skeletal enemies and cursed monsters, introducing siege engines, weapon enchantments and more
  • Call to Arms Update, overhauling the combat system, reworking parrying, introducing new trinket items and adrenaline and yes, you read that right, bears.
  • Deep North Biome Update that releases alongside Valheim 1.0, and with it a new land hidden in snow and wrought with ancient evils and lurking threats, serving as the ultimate test of players’ might as they seek to impress Odin and ascend to Valhalla.

Valheim is out now on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, Linux and Mac, featuring full crossplay between platforms. You can follow Valheim on Bluesky, Instagram and Discord for more information and updates on the game’s future.
