Death Rally Review

Aug 03, 2012

The original Death Rally was developed by Remedy Games and released in 1996 on PC. My first introduction to the game was a demo that was included with Duke Nukem 3D. In 2011, the game returned on iOS and Android. Having owned that version, was pretty responsive, was a blast, and looked great doing it. Now the game has made its way back to PCs.

Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel announced, reboot by Visceral Games

Electronic Arts Inc.  today announced Army of TWO The Devil’s Cartel, the gritty third installment to the blockbuster action franchise celebrated for its intense, two player co-operative gameplay. Developed by Visceral Games, the award-winning creators of Dead SpaceArmy of TWO The Devil’s Cartel re-sets the series that pioneered the co-op experience with a more intense, mature and grittier tone. Players will find themselves on the deadly streets of Mexico as Alpha and Bravo, two operatives working for Tactical Worldwide Operations (T.W.O.), a PMC outfit that drops them in the middle of a drug war conflict for an assignment full of corruption and deceit. With the ability to unleash the power of ultimate destruction, players will need to work together as their objectives unravel, allegiances begin to blur and they face off against a ruthless opposition.

“We wanted to refresh the Army of TWO franchise for a new generation of action gamers, and at the same time, stay true to the core concept that really made the first two games fan favorites,” said Julian Beak, Executive Producer, Visceral Games. “With meaningful, seamless co-op gameplay at its core and explosive new tag-team features, gamers will have to work together tactically and strategically as they push through a city dominated by one of Mexico’s deadliest drug cartels.”

Take On Helicopters and Noisecontrollers get together for Free DLC

Aug 02, 2012

Dropping in clouds – In support of the free Take On Noisecontrollers DLC for Bohemia Interactive’s Take On Helicopters, the studio released a new developer’s blog on the unique collaboration with the famous DJ and producer duo. The article sheds some more light on the behind-the-scenes process of this remarkable venture.

In Noisecontrolled, Joris-Jan van ‘t Land, who created the Noisecontrollers DLC in his free time and is the Project Lead on Take On Helicopters, explains how the idea for mixing a helicopter game with hardstyle music came to be. He also vividly describes how it eventually tied in with one of the most popular hardstyle festival in the Netherlands, Defqon.1 2012.

Project Lead Joris-Jan van ‘t Land:

“At first glance it may not seem like a logical marriage: electronic music and helicopter games. The links between the two themes came from the personal interests of myself and several others who helped along the way. With this project I did not set out to optimize profits or find the biggest target audience. It’s important to keep in mind that TON was not developed in Bohemia Interactive’s work hours. Those involved contributed in their own time and because they wanted to deliver something cool. I’ll just go ahead and say it: this was purely selfish, and I’m proud to have done it!”

The full developer’s blog is now available at http://www.bistudio.com/english/company/developers-blog/321-noisecontrolled

Take On Helicopters pilots can download the DLC for free at: http://takeonthegame.com/noisecontrollers/

Oculus Rift needs Kickstarting – Supported by Valve/id Software/Epic Games/Unity/DOOM 3 BFG Edition

Aug 01, 2012

The long-awaited goal of virtual reality (VR) for video games came a step closer today as Oculus, a developer of virtual reality technology, launched a Kickstarter campaign
for its new headset—the “Oculus Rift.” The campaign aims to speed the distribution of early development kits to game developers and enthusiasts around the world. People can join the initiative by visiting the Kickstarter page at http://kck.st/MLCaEC.

Oculus, led by a number of successful video game veterans and virtual reality visionaries, has set the funding goal at $250,000 USD. A contribution of $300 or more gets the donor a Rift VR headset dev kit, access to the software development kit (SDK) and a copy of Doom 3 BFG, which has already been integrated with the headset. The package enables developers not only to experience VR gaming for the first time, but to easily integrate the Rift with their own games or 3D applications.

“All of us at Oculus are excited to bring truly immersive VR to people who love video games like we do,” said Palmer Luckey, Founder of Oculus. “Virtual reality has been the long sought after Holy Grail, which most people only ever dreamed of… until now. The Rift is a true game changer that will help
make VR the standard for gameplay in the very near future.”

The Rift allows players to step into game. It produces a stereoscopic 3D experience with a huge field of view—110 degrees diagonally—so you don’t see the screen. It also overcomes the resolution and latency problems that have plagued previous VR headsets, where movement in the game lags behind movement of the head.

“We’ve already gotten great feedback from the press and buy-in from major game developers including id Software, Epic, Unity and Valve,” Luckey said. “We know the gaming community will be as excited as we all are when they get their hands on it.”

“I’m a believer,” said Cliff Bleszinski, design director at Epic Games. “We’re extremely excited here at
Epic Games to get the Unreal Engine integrated with Oculus!”

“I think this will be the coolest way to experience games in the future. It will simply be that big,”
offered David Helgason, CEO of Unity.

“It looks incredibly exciting. If anybody’s going to tackle this set of hard problems, we think that
Palmer’s going to do it. So we’d strongly encourage gamers to support this Kickstarter,” said Gabe
Newell, president and owner of Valve.

The developer kits acquired through Kickstarter will include access to the Oculus Developer Center, a community for Oculus developers. The Oculus Rift SDK will include code, samples, and documentation to facilitate integration with any new or existing games, initially on PCs and mobiles, with consoles to follow.

Oculus will be showcasing the Rift at a number of upcoming tradeshows, including Quakecon, Siggraph, GDC Europe, gamescom and Unite.

Any developer or publisher interested in meeting with Oculus should email rift@oculusvr.com. For more information, visit: www.oculusvr.com

Star Wars: The Old Republic going F2P This Fall, Options Detailed

Jul 31, 2012

BioWare, a Label of Electronic Arts, announced today that it will be expanding the story-driven, massively multiplayer online game Star Wars: The Old Republic by adding a new Free-to-Play option this fall. This option will give players access to each of the eight iconic Star Wars character class storylines, all the way up to level 50, with certain restrictions*. Unlimited game access, including new higher-level game content and new features, will be made available through individual purchases or through a subscription option.

“Players want flexibility and choice. The subscription-only model presented a major barrier for a lot of people who wanted to become part of The Old Republic™ universe,” said Matthew Bromberg, GM of BioWare Austin.

Jeff Hickman, Executive Producer of Star Wars: The Old Republic added, “Since launch, we’ve been listening to feedback from our fans and adding new content and refining The Old Republic at a breakneck pace. We believe we are in a position to help improve the service even more, not only by continuing to add new content, but also by expanding the game to many more Star Wars fans, increasing the populations on worlds and the vibrancy of the community.”

Starting this fall, there will be two different ways to play Star Wars: The Old Republic:

  • Subscription – A service designed for players who want unrestricted access to all the game features via ongoing subscription or by redeeming a Game Time Card. In addition to gaining access to all game content as our current subscribers do now, subscribers will receive ongoing monthly grants of Cartel Coins, the new virtual currency that will be introduced later this fall. Cartel Coins can be used to purchase valuable in-game items including customizable gear and convenience features that will enhance the game play experience.
  • Free-To-Play – The first 50 levels will be Free-to-Play, with restrictions on access to new content and advanced player features. Some restrictions can be “unlocked” with Cartel Coins.

As the first step towards adding the new Free-to-Play option this fall, Star Wars: The Old Republic will go on sale in August for $14.99 USD, including one-month of free subscription.

Current and former players will also find additional benefits as part of this program. BioWare will be increasing the frequency of game content updates, with the first of many new releases coming in August.  In addition, current subscribers will receive Cartel Coin grants and qualify for access to special in-game items. Even former players who re-activate now will qualify for special benefits. To learn more about these rewards, please visit www.StarWarstheOldRepublic.com/FREE.

Death Rally returns to PC on August 3rd

Jul 31, 2012

Death Rally has been back on mobile devices, but the folks at Remedy have taken that and brought it back to the game’s original home, the PC. The original Death Rally released on PC in 1996. I spent many hours playing that game. I eventually picked up the iOS remake from Remedy and enjoyed it – but all along I had wished it were on PC. Now that is finally the case!
