Operation Supply Drop weekend prepares to Send Games to Troops Overseas

Nov 06, 2012

Parties organized by gamers across America this weekend will raise funds for and collect video games and consoles to be sent to U.S. troops deployed to Afghanistan as well as being rehabilitated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.  The events, part of Operation Supply Drop’s national Veteran’s Day “8-Bit Salute to Veterans,” will be held in Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York City on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012. Gamers everywhere are invited to participate.

Attendees and others can contribute via monetary donations or drop boxes.  The events will feature live music, bars, game tournaments and prizes.  Professional athletes will support the Dallas and Los Angeles events.  The Dallas party will also have the Charisma +2 calendar models.  Pamela Horton, an avid gamer and Playboy Playmate Miss October 2012, will be present at the Los Angeles event.

Captain Stephen “Shanghai Six” Machuga, a former Army Airborne Ranger, founded Operation Supply Drop in 2010, after serving for eight years with the US Army, including 13 months in Iraq.  An avid video game player himself, Machuga realized that many soldiers are gamers and don’t have access while deployed to their favorite form of entertainment, one of the few types of leisure activity permitted in high threat areas.

“When soldiers aren’t outside the wire on patrol, their favorite activity is playing video games,” explains Machuga. “Our packages are an immeasurable morale booster; troops are accustomed to getting care packages from strangers full of baby wipes and socks.  Our care packages are designed to blow their socks off.”

Since the charity’s establishment, Operation Supply Drop has raised more than $60,000 in games and gear packages, each with an average value of $2,000 to units deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan. With the help of a variety of allied gaming organizations, Operation Supply Drop’s “8-Bit Salute to Veterans” will be one of the country’s largest efforts undertaken in support of Veteran’s Day. Join one of these groups on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012.

Halo 4 from 343 Industries, Launches Worldwide Today

Nov 06, 2012

The Master Chief is back. Poised to become the biggest entertainment launch of the year so far, “Halo 4” is the first chapter of a brand-new saga in the genre-defining, $3 billion franchise that has shaped entertainment history and sold a staggering 46 million games worldwide. Hailed by NBC News as “breathtaking, heart-breaking and awe-inspiring,”1 “Halo 4” has garnered universal acclaim as one of the top-rated video games of 2012, according to Metacritic. In a year jam-packed with record-breaking Hollywood movies and games, “Halo 4” is expected to break all previous day-one entertainment sales records in 2012, cementing its status as the must-have blockbuster of the year.

Excitement for the return of the Master Chief has swept the globe. In London, a massive illuminated glyph soared over the River Thames, a symbol of the new threat that has awakened in “Halo 4.” The glyph, which measures 50 feet in diameter and weighs 3.2 tons, was illuminated by 113,096 LED lights and represents one of the largest objects ever to be flown by helicopter as a lighting art performance. On Oct. 30, the European country of Liechtenstein was reimagined into a real-life replica of the “Halo” universe, marking the first time a brand has taken over an entire country for an entertainment launch. For one day only, Xbox 360 transformed some of the country’s most iconic landmarks, including a 13th-century castle and a working mine, to create a mysterious alternate universe in the heart of Europe — all inspired by “Halo.”

Around the world, midnight madness swept more than 10,000 stores in more than 40 countries, as hundreds of thousands of fans lined up around city blocks to count down to the game’s release. At marquee launch events in Seattle, Paris, London, Berlin, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, Sydney and other major cities, throngs of fans, celebrities and athletes flocked to be among the first to play “Halo 4” and participate in other launch activities, such as meeting the creators of the game, viewing private screenings of the live-action digital series “Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn,” and taking photos with the Master Chief.

“‘Halo 4’ marks a rebirth and a new beginning for one of the most beloved and iconic franchises in the modern history of entertainment,” said Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Studios. “Over the past decade, the ‘Halo’ franchise has become a bona fide pop culture phenomenon, and ‘Halo 4’ promises to take the franchise to a new level and set the stage for the next decade of ‘Halo.’”

With the launch of “Halo 4” coinciding with Election Day, Microsoft Corp. is amplifying its get-out-the-vote campaign, which kicked off earlier this year in collaboration with Rock the Vote, to encourage “Halo” and Xbox LIVE fans to exercise their civic duty before jumping into “Halo 4.” The campaign began with voter recruitment efforts at major consumer events as well as a voter registration program on Xbox LIVE and expanded to major launch events and more than 100 college campuses nationwide yesterday.

[box_light]Developed by Microsoft Studios’ 343 Industries exclusively for the Xbox 360, “Halo 4” is set nearly five years after the events of “Halo 3” and follows the Master Chief and his faithful artificial intelligence (AI) companion Cortana as they venture into a mysterious new world and discover an overpowering ancient evil that threatens to annihilate mankind. “Halo 4” takes the series in a bold new direction by delivering its most epic and explorative campaign yet, alongside a groundbreaking multiplayer offering unlike anything before it, known as Spartan Ops. This story-driven, episodic, cooperative adventure blends immersive storytelling, stunning cinematics and action-packed gameplay to deliver an unprecedented serialized experience. Through a weekly series of cinematic episodes, Spartan Ops continues the story beyond the main campaign by introducing new characters, storylines and gameplay missions over a 10-week season, akin to a high-quality, interactive TV show.[/box_light]

Need For Speed: Most Wanted Review

Nov 05, 2012

Criterion’s second outing as a developer of a Need For Speed title, is an interesting one. This is a reboot of the 2005 game, Most Wanted – that in it of itself is a strange proposition. It turns out that this game is mostly what I wanted, not exactly what I wanted most.

Forza Horizon DLC out on Tuesday, the November Bondurant Car Pack

Nov 03, 2012

The newest “Forza Horizon” Car Pack will be available for download starting Tuesday, November 6 on Xbox LIVE Marketplace, adding a new batch of amazing cars for “Forza Horizon” fans to collect, drive and explore the open roads of Colorado in. From off-road beasts designed to tame any surface to legendary drift cars, the November Bondurant Car Pack has something for car fans of every stripe.

The November Bondurant Car Pack for “Forza Horizon” includes six vehicles prepped and ready to tackle the open roads of Forza Horizon’s Colorado, including:

  • 2012 Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder PerformanteAt 3,274 pounds overall, this is the lightest open-top Lamborghini ever. Carbon fiber abounds, from the door panels to the center tunnel cover. Even among its Lambo brethren, the Performante stands out as something special.
  • 2012 Shelby 1000: The Shelby 1000 is not just a Mustang with immense horsepower, it is an entirely custom-built machine. Mash the pedal on the right and unleash this conservatively rated 950 horsepower monster and it will be obvious: This is a car that Carroll Shelby would have been proud of.
  • 2010 BMW M3 GTS: The ultimate factory M3 comes with more in all the right departments and less wherever it made sense for a street-legal track car. Lightened everywhere conceivable and fully adjustable from the suspension to the rear wing, the M3 GTS is a versatile weapon on the track or the open road.
  • 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C: Marketed as “the fastest streetcar in the world,” the 427 — the “S/C” stands for “semi-competition” — is the most desirable of all the Shelby Cobra variants. Out of the 100 that were planned, only 53 were built. In essence, the S/C is nothing less than a purpose-built race car, converted at the last minute for street use.
  • 1994 Nissan 240SX SE: Some fans say the drift scene begins (and ends) with the 240 SX SE. Low cost, lightweight, and with plenty of power, the SE earned its legendary status one E-brake slide at a time. Whether driving for points or just hooning it up, the 240SX is a willing partner in the thrilling automotive dance of drifting.
  • 2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon: Whether cruising on asphalt or tearing up Forza Horizon’s backroads, this beast is as rugged as it comes. Perfect for drivers looking to indulge an outdoorsy bent or for those who just want to intimidate the competition, the Rubicon always delivers.

The November Bondurant Car Pack will be available on Tuesday, November 6 on the Xbox LIVE marketplace for 400 Microsoft Points.
