Get your Square, Square, Square, Triangle combos ready because Koei Tecmo has just released their latest Musou title upon the masses. Warriors All-Stars is a mashup of the company’s wide cast of characters into a single crossover game. Kasumi fighting against Zhao Yun? It’s here. How about the Samurai Cats version of Nobunyaga Oda battling it out with William Adams from Nioh? Warriors All-Stars has it. It’s a fun Warriors title, but not without some missteps.
Earlier in the year SEGA released Yakuza 0, a prequel to the first Yakuza game released over a decade ago. It was one I rather enjoyed a lot. The combat was fun, the story intense, and the side objectives were entertaining. I never got around to reviewing the game, but it is definitely a contender for my Game of the Year list. Yakuza 0 made me a fan of this series and I’ve been eagerly awaiting Yakuza Kiwami. Fast forward a few months and Kiwami is here; a remake of the first Yakuza title utilizing the game engine from Yakuza 0. The game doesn’t disappoint either, it’s wonderful.
SEGA’s marquee franchise has had a rough time over the years finding it’s footing. They’ve hit some good titles like Sonic Generations and some misguided ones like the episodic Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Needless to say, Sonic’s had his share of highs and lows, but the hedgehog constantly proves to be one of gaming’s popular icons. Sonic Mania is a near perfect return to form for the blue blur, bringing back the 2D sidescrolling of yore and this time his 16-bit looks as well.
It’s not hard to draw comparisons between Oceanhorn and a certain iconic Nintendo Franchise. So it’s only fitting that the game eventually made it’s way to Nintendo’s newest platform, the Switch. Looking at screenshots, it’s easy to see that the developers were inspired by Nintendo’s tunic wearing hero. The similarities are undeniable; the hero’s appearance, the game’s narrative, and overall design choices scream The Legend of Zelda. I’m not saying that’s at all a bad thing though as Oceanhorn takes the formula and gives it their own touch. Whether it’s any fun is a whole other issue.
Ubisoft’s depiction of Bolivia in Ghost Recon Wildlands is gorgeous. It’s got the lush greens of jungles, snowy whites of the mountains, swamps, salt-flats, quarries, and caves. Travel anywhere in this giant sandbox and do anything you’d like. One could say, feel free to go… Wild.
Agent 47 has completed his first full season in 2016’s self titled game HITMAN. With 6 maps, loads of equipment, a variety of costumes, and many ways to play, HITMAN is filled to the brim with content. I came away amazed by the game and can not recommend it enough to anyone. With the first season pressed onto a disc, I think it’s time I finally gave some of my thoughts on this sneaky assassin’s newest venture.
I’ve been waiting a long time for a decent Mighty Morphin Power Rangers game. You’d think the property would be ripe for a good beat’em up. 5 heroes (6 if you include Tommy) fighting a bunch of generic bad guys, eventually fighting a bigger more elaborate bad guy, then a grander battle with said bad guy. Doesn’t that sound like every beat’em up ever made? It’s not for a lack of trying though, through many releases on the SNES and Genesis, us 90’s kids got a taste of what a good Power Rangers game could be. Enter 2017 and Bamtang indulges us with a multicolored nostalgia treat. It’s unfortunate that it tastes more like sour candy – not everyone likes it, but those who do will find it enjoyable.
Ed has been hard at work planning a wedding, but in the meantime, has found time for some games this year. He’s planted and harvested in Stardew Valley, cooking under pressure in Overcooked, and what else? Well, you’re just gonna have to see where these games shook out on his list.
I’m not sure exactly how I feel about this game. I like the fact its combat is very Dark Souls-esque. It requires timing and some strategy. But I don’t particularly enjoy losing all my progress upon death. This game walks this weird line where I want to enjoy it but I also want to hate it.
