Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders Review

Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders takes everything that made Lonely Mountains: Downhill so good, trades BMX bikes for skis, and then transports players to snow-covered slopes to be a satisfying follow-up. The act of playing the game is transcendent, often harrowing as you’ll be jumping massive chasms and gaps while avoiding rocks, trees, and ice patches. Megagon Industries really nails the sense of speed and dread as you’re careening down the face of a mountain. Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders is once again a brilliant adventure of embracing gravity and defying the odds thanks to the impeccable controls to be another gem of a game.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind does for “Power Rangers” what Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge did for “Ninja Turtles” a couple of years ago. And that’s to make a side-scrolling beat’em up that evokes nostalgia but is made entirely new. I’m a massive Power Rangers fan, and have been for its entire 30-year run. The quality of games made for this franchise have not been good or anything anyone was wanting since the 90s. It’s good then that Digital Eclipse has made a “Power Rangers” game by “Power Rangers” fans for “Power Ranger” fans, and it shows. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is what dreams are made of, but it’s much better and more exciting in reality.

The last 3D Indiana Jones game that wasn’t a mobile or LEGO one was Indiana Jones and the Emperor’s Tomb back in 2003. It’s been a long time since then, and MachineGames has made Indiana Jones and the Great Circle more than worth the wait. Now, this is not Uncharted or even Tomb Raider; this is Indiana Jones, the genuine article and inspiration for so many games to be in a class all its own. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is an absolute treasure, and it belongs in a museum (after you’ve played it, of course).

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is a brilliant game, marred by only a few issues. Despite it being a sequel, it doesn’t require familiarity with the series as is it’s both a continuation and entry point for all players. “S.T.A.L.K.E.R” actually is an acronym, and it stands for Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Loners, Killers, Explorers and Robbers – and you will be all of these things in a single playthrough. It’s an immersive, surreal, and utterly fantastic game that blurs the line between first-person shooter and role-playing game that eschews all the conventions you might be used to. Against all odds, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is here, and the adventure within the zone is a great one that must be played.

Turtle Beach Stealth Pivot is a wireless smart controller with a neat gimmick that offers functionality. It asks and answers the question of: why settle with multiple controllers when you can do it all with one? Because this controller has the ability to take the shape of multiple configuration for various genres of games, to become the ideal controller for each gaming situation without ever needing to switch to another controller to accomplish this. It’s a controller I didn’t expect much from initially, but the more I used it, the more uses it had for me. The Turtle Beach Stealth Pivot may not be on your radar, but it should be.

Simply put, ASTRONEER: Glitchwalkers_ is better understood as a challenge mode for ASTRONEER than an expansion as we normally understand them. And for that, it’s hard to recommend this for everyone, as it can be too frustrating at times.

Tetris Forever is a time machine disguised as a puzzle experience, all thanks to Digital Eclipse. The block-dropping and stacking game series is a video game staple. It’s something everyone has played at least once in their life, even if they’re not a “gamer”. Digital Eclipse makes this digital museum a place where you watch, learn, and play through gaming history’s most interesting series. There are over a dozen games to play, to include an original game from Digital Eclipse called Tetris Time Warp that make it just worth it, even if there are some glaring omissions.

Mirthwood is a game filled with potential. Its charming world, quirky characters, and beautiful art style are undeniable strengths. For the first half of its namesake meaning “amusement, especially as expressed in laughter” – I found the game in contrast of that. However, technical issues, repetitive gameplay, and pacing problems prevent it from truly capturing that potential. Beneath Mirthwood‘s whimsical exterior lies a game riddled with technical issues, repetitive gameplay, and pacing problems don’t make it worth the time you can put into it – yet.

I’m gonna be honest, I did not like Goat Simulator when it first came out – it just didn’t resonate with me at the time, and the bugs and lack of structure were the frustrating elements that had me putting my controller down for good on it. It was 2014, a simpler time, and the internet roared with laughter at the sheer ridiculousness of becoming a four-legged menace. That said, I ended up loving Goat Simulator 3, the second game in the series as it fixed nearly everything I didn’t like about the original. Ten years later on from the original release, Goat Simulator: Remastered, a spruced-up version of the original with all the DLC bundled in. Goat Simulator: Remastered still suffers from a lot of the quibbles of that game’s core design, but I have to admit that I find it a little more endearing this time around, and it’s udder nonsense of a game.

LEGO Horizon Adventures is a fun and different way to experience the world, characters, and events of Horizon Zero Dawn. Guerrilla and Studio Gobo collaborate on this unexpected parody that does well to emulate what worked in the TT Games, but in a decidedly different way. It’s not an overly long journey for Aloy, but it is a great one. LEGO Horizon Adventures is a charming and incredibly gorgeous game that captures Horizon Zero Dawn from a different perspective, and is enjoyable for the whole family at any age.
