The Mummy Demastered Review

Oct 24, 2017

Offering an experience that holds its own, is bolstered by it being a minor tie-in to “The Mummy” (2017). The Mummy Demastered seemingly comes out of nowhere from WayForward Games. The surprise though, is a pleasant one, because this is a great game that even if it didn’t have the cinematic property it draws from, would still be an excellent recommendation. The Mummy Demastered also flips the “Metroidvania” on its head with new mechanics, and delivers a game that alters your expectations for the genre.

Former WayForward team launches Yacht Club Games

Mar 06, 2013

Sean Velasco, formerly of WayForward, announced that he and an unnumbered group of dudes have splintered and formed a new studio, Yacht Club Games. How luxurious. Their vision is clear, and they seem to be more ambitious and free than they were in the past with WayForward. I very much look forward to see what they do next (I’ll make sure I find out).

Here’s their introductory letter:

Hello World!

It’s with great excitement that we announce the formation of Yacht Club Games: a proudly independent game developer started in 2011 by Sean Velasco and a crew from WayForward. We are a fun-loving bunch of gaming geniuses who have dedicated our lives to video games ever since we saw our first pixels. However, our serious and solemn goal is to make really awesome games that fuse modern and retro game philosophies, and we have the pedigree to prove it! Our team is comprised of top talent that has worked on some amazing titles, including Contra 4, A Boy and His Blob, Thor: God of Thunder, Mighty Milky Way, BloodRayne: Betrayal, and most recently, Double Dragon Neon.

So what are we all about? While our team is synonymous with retro revivals, we want to share our original brand of personality! We want to create fun and challenging gameplay with concise and polished mechanics. We want to both tug at your heartstrings and delight you with levity and charm. We want to make games that you play together with friends and family. Most of all, we want to give everyone the same collective types of game experiences that have defined our generation. It’s such an exciting time to be a fan of games; the industry is experiencing a renaissance and creativity is flourishing. We are so, so excited to develop games that we love, in hopes that you love them too. Let’s make a splash!

Double Dragon Neon Review

Sep 14, 2012

WayForward Technologies has quite the reputation for rebooting series into wonderful 2D sidescrollers while paying respect to the source material. If you’ve played the original Double Dragon, Neon starts off in basically the same fashion; a few thugs come into town, see your girl Marian waiting outside for you, punch her in the gut, and kidnap her. Obviously the end goal is to rescue the bodacious Marian while unleashing the psychedelic fighting powers of brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee.

Double Dragon: Neon Announced and Coming This Summer

Apr 05, 2012

Majesco Entertainment Company, an innovative provider of video games for the mass market, announced today that Double Dragon: Neon will be released as a full-scale digital game on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®Network this summer.  Majesco Entertainment has once again partnered with WayForward, the award-winning team known for bringing franchise favorites including BloodRayne: Betrayal back to audiences in exciting new ways, and is thrilled for the fan-favorite developer to put its signature spin on the father of all brawlers: Double Dragon! Double Dragon: Neon isn’t a shoddy sequel – it’s a face-melting 80’s tour de force! Featuring bodacious characters, gnarly combat, and a retro aesthetic, it’s pure over-the-top baditude…to the max!

“Double Dragon: Neon is far from a standard retro remake,” said Sean Velasco, Director, WayForward. “It’s WayForward’s love letter to the decade that spawned the franchise – the music, the style, and culture of the 80’s pulse through the nucleus of Double Dragon: Neon. But don’t think this is a simple graphical facelift; with our innovative ‘mix tape’ level up system and power-up high-fives, we pushed it to the limit!”

Known for the beautiful aesthetics and renowned gameplay of A Boy and his BlobContra 4Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and BloodRayne: Betrayal, WayForward is applying its focused attention to detail on Double Dragon: Neon. Taking place in a hyper-saturated omniverse, players beat up baddies across earth and beyond against the Black Dragon Clan’s most nefarious leader yet– the supernatural scourge Skullmageddon. You could go it alone, but why wouldn’t you want to grab a buddy and take your game to the next level with drop-in, drop-out online ‘Bro-Op’?!

Gamers will get a tempting glimpse of this fresh take on Double Dragon this week at PAX East where Double Dragon: Neon will be debuting a playable demo at the Reverb Booth (808). Double Dragon: Neon on Xbox LIVE Arcade for Xbox 360 and PlayStation®Network is expected to release this summer.
