Look, a lot of games come out each year. More games were released this year over last. A lot’s changed in this decade in gaming. As a result, it’s becoming increasingly harder to find the time to play them for review, or play anything else for fun. So yes, there’s going to be glaring omissions and other oddities, but at least understand there’s just a lot of fucking games right now. And a lot of them are good. So let’s kick this thing off!
WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE! It feels like the pace of new game releases is increasing at an alarming rate year over year, and each time I sit down to write one of these things, I think that the next year can’t possibly pack any more stuff into it than the previous one, and every single time I am proven wrong. It’s too much to keep up with and I can’t possibly stay on top of all of them, especially with my unfortunate preference for online multiplayer games and/or games that take up a TON of time to finish. This is the last year I’m going to complain about the too many games/not enough time conundrum, I promise. From here on out it’s just going to be lists with the aforementioned grumbling baked in as an automatic assumption. It’s an understanding I think most of us have pretty well figured out at this point.
Another year and another great batch of games to come along. When the end of the year rolls around, it’s always hard to encapsulate just how many games made their way into my rotation. Those that left a lasting impact. Luckily for me, it’s been time to sit down and finalize the list for 2019.
Let’s face it, Newport News TV has the best motion graphics thanks to Ed (give them a Like 👍). Aside from real-life obligations and settling into married life, Ed played a lot of games this year. The best ones in his opinion are ordered and numbered for your reading convenience.
Outside of gaming, 2017 will be be a year to remember – or one you want to forget. It’s personally been one of my best years, as I’ve started a new day job, bought a house, and feel like a proper-ass adult for the first time a long time. But we’re here about games, and what a wild ride and great year for games 2017 was. This has been the hardest list to assemble for the 2,017th year in a row, because not only did I play so many games, but there were a lot to like and even love – 2018 has a lot to live up to.
Ed has played a smattering of games throughout the year. This was a busy year personally for him, with a day job and getting married, but he still made time to play games. Here’s his personal favorites in a very specific order from this year.
Ed has been hard at work planning a wedding, but in the meantime, has found time for some games this year. He’s planted and harvested in Stardew Valley, cooking under pressure in Overcooked, and what else? Well, you’re just gonna have to see where these games shook out on his list.
This year Rex decided to be different and call his list the “Favorite Games of 2016”, but honestly, there are 10 games here and some honorable mentions. Why isn’t it a “Top 10 Games of 2016” list like everyone else? I’ll never know. But what I do know, is that Rex has played a healthy amount of games this year, and distilling those games to get these results onto this list couldn’t have been easy.
To say that 2016 has been an interesting year would be a drastic understatement. The year has put us through our paces, bringing with it an unrelenting series of cultural events great and terrible that are sure to leave a lasting mark for decades to come. If the year’s events were a sine wave, both its frequency and amplitude would stand out amongst those of other recent years. Happily, I’d say that most of the big things to hit the gaming scene in 2016 were perched atop the peaks of those waves. It feels like those of us in the gaming community say this every year, but it truly has never been a better time to be a gamer. We’ve had some really excellent titles to sink our teeth into, a surprising number of which were deliveries on development promises that have been keeping us hungry for over five or even as much as ten years.
Klein has actually had more time for games this year, and has rounded-up a powerful Top 10 Games he’s played in 2016. Yes, a few of them are from his 2015 list, but that doesn’t mean those games haven’t done something worthwhile to earn a place onto this year’s list – though, there sure is a lot of shooting on this list.
To date, Harry has now only written two reviews for Saving Content, but he plays lots of games we are otherwise already covering. Though, he’s also playing games that aren’t on many people’s radar, which makes his list one to look for as it may present games to you that maybe you hadn’t heard of before.
The above is in no way a spoiler of Justin’s number one game, but it definitely appears on this list. Justin has been busy this year between YouTube, writing, and of course his family and other real-world obligations. This is why Justin has assembled a hearty list of games he’s played this year, and if you haven’t played something from this list, you should be convinced to start.
