Dead Cells: The Bad Seed from Motion Twin and Evil Empire provides several new areas to Dead Cells meant to shake things up. They modify the game in a way that makes it feel exciting and new, that if you’ve been playing for any length of time, has either become incredibly predictable or overstayed its welcome. The DLC is well worth the asking price, and the locations and associated enemies are to die for. The Bad Seed never felt so good.
Video games are a form of escapism, and this was a year we needed that more than ever. It’s great that 2018 had some amazing games, from the beginning all the way through until the end. There was something for everyone to enjoy and spend upwards of 100 hours playing. While it made the task of formulating a list of the best games of the year especially difficult, this is a good problem to have.
Evan is a friend first and foremost, but last year we became co-workers at our day jobs too. Which, is just the coolest thing. It pleases me greatly he’s now a father (to one h*ckin’ cute kid, I might add). I think it’s safe to say 2018’s been good to him, and to games. And after a hiatus of making a list for 2017, he’s back with a surprising amount of games played this year for a new dad.
Dead Cells is a first of its kind roguevania, and while the idea of mashing up these genres seems a bit strange, it works incredibly well. If you didn’t know, this has been on Steam Early Access for the past year and change. When I previewed this last year, I knew it was something special. Now with the “1.0” build, I’m confident in saying that it’s still special, a prime example of Early Access done right, and one of the finest games of the year.
