What if being on the brink of war meant actually going to war? What if everything you loved was gone in an instant? Fallout 4 explores the human element of both pre- and post-war Boston, seeing the fragile world shattered right before your eyes. Your journey in this new wasteland will allow you to have to make hard choices, creating friends and enemies, and help unite the Commonwealth through a fantastic system that allows you to rebuild whole communities through what you can scavenge. This is a bigger, more beautiful, and better-realized Fallout.
Lara Croft has been a household name for years now when it comes to the gaming world. I remember fondly playing the first game on Thanksgiving Day and running into the T-Rex in shock. It was a magical moment for a young kid, one that has stuck with me ever since, and the series has hit those same notes for better or worse throughout its franchise life. From humble and exciting beginnings to some misguided entries in the series. Throughout the games, once thing has always endured, Lara Croft. While Crystal Dynamics decided it was time to reboot the series a few years ago, people felt a significant change. Moving more towards combat and featuring light elements of actual tomb raiding and story elements, it was a huge surprise to some, disappoint to others, and left most wondering where the series would go next. Rise of the Tomb Raider is here to satisfy both fans and give long time players that sense of discovery once more.
When I hear Guitar Hero, I always think back to my college days. I was the only person in my circle of friends who had the game and two of the guitars. People rocked out at my place and I was always asked to bring Guitar Hero to other people’s homes; everyone wanted to play with the controller. It was something new, something strange, but most of all something fun. But for me, as much as the game was fun, it was also quite an experience getting to show people the new guitar controller. It will be a while before something will recapture those same feelings of newness, but Guitar Hero Live comes close.
WWE 2K15 was a game that fell victim to the problems that all sports games on this generation have suffered from in their first entry: unimpressive visuals, trimmed down modes and features, and small rosters. But that game also went in a different direction, focusing more on being a simulation of the WWE, rather than an arcadey feel that the games before it had. Thankfully, WWE 2K16 fixes most of what plagued the previous game, and the result is a better focused, looking, and playing game that is more accurate to the simulation of wrestling and the WWE than ever before.
Years ago I stumbled upon some friends playing this new and interesting game. It required using a dance pad on the floor along with matching arrows to the beat of music. I didn’t want to try it but I gave it my all and became addicted to it. Ever since then I’ve been a huge fan of music based rhythm games. I hadn’t heard much about Superbeat Xonic and for that I’m sorry.
If you had asked me as a young boy if I ever thought Yoshi would have a ton of games after his debut in Super Mario World, I’d have said you’re crazy. Don’t get me wrong, Yoshi is arguably the best side-kick Mario has ever had in the main series and cute to boot. Now years later and many games under his belt, Yoshi returns and in a whole new, yet familiar way. Made of yarn and looking for his friends, this game can quite possible have you in stitches, in all the right ways.
Darksiders 2 released a few years ago and seemingly appeared to be the last of the franchise we would ever see as THQ and Vigil closed shop. Now with the franchise owned and operated by Nordic and having some of the original folks working on it we have Darksiders 2 Deathinitive Edition on PS4 and Xbox One. A definite purchase for fans of adventures games, but what if you’ve already played it?
Dragon Ball Z is something of a relic for me. I grew up watching episodes with my high school friends. It was an interesting show, with too much filler episodes, but yet had some awesome fight scenes when they did show up. Luckily with game versions of the series, players get to take control and beat the crap out of enemies instead. We have had a ton of DBZ games, so does this one stand out at all?
Rock Band 4 is my first time playing a game in the plastics instruments genre. I’ve watched at the periphery but just never had a chance to play these games because I was never in a living situation that could accommodate big and loud plastic instruments. But now that I live in my own house, I was finally able to play a Rock Band game. In preparation for this review, I also purchased Rock Band 1-3 as well as Rock Band: Beatles to be able to play them and have some context about the series.
In life there are a few things that are absolute. Water is wet, time never stops, and there will be a Halo on an Xbox. Not that this is a bad thing however; Halo has always been Microsoft’s pride and joy on the Xbox consoles and good care is taken on each one. Even the less than stellar games like Spartan Assault or Halo Wars are created with love for the franchise. So it’ll be no surprise when I tell you that 343 have done an exceptional job with Halo 5: Guardians.
Forza Horizon 2 took the Horizon festival to Europe and allowed you to drive all over the countryside and coastlines in great fashion with mostly sunny skies. Storm Island takes you to a Greek isle in design and location, but is non-descript otherwise. This expansion continues the festival among some terrific looking and behaving weather that does impact your driving and visibility, making me wish there was more to see and do on Storm Island.
They did it, they finally did it. After years and years of screaming how much we wanted a good Transformers game, let alone a Generation One game, Hasbro and Activision finally threw us a bone. They gave Platinum Games the duties of design and what was crafted is something truly amazing
It’s the month of October and if you celebrate Halloween, that only means one thing: Scary stuff is in season! That’s what makes this release the perfect time. A long awaited sequel to a franchise that has become extremely popular on the PSP is finally landing on the Vita and with it comes a host of changes. Is this a scary game that you should jump head first into, or did the transition to the Vita bring along with it more nightmares?
Rebel Galaxy gives you a blank slate in which to fulfill your wildest space dreams of becoming a pirate, trader, mercenary, be loved or hated by the militia, or even a hero or villain to the civilians that inhabit this galaxy. You can be all of these things throughout the course of your time with the game. There is no end at which you stop playing except under your own volition, but that will be a hard thing to do. Rebel Galaxy evokes space games of the past and the familiar while placing gameplay firmly in the present.
During Destiny’s first year, we’ve seen some ups and downs. People left, then came back to see what’s new, and left again when they felt fulfilled. There were those who scorned the game for not having enough loot and not enough new stuff to do. Then you had people like me who stuck with it through the year and enjoyed playing a game that was just plain fun to shoot aliens. If the Taken King is any indication for Destiny’s second year, then we’re off to an amazing start.
