After a year, Super Mario Maker makes its way to the small screen of your Nintendo 3DS. This is a portable version of Super Mario Maker that you’ve always wanted, but it isn’t as powerful as its larger console brother. And getting the game onto handhelds required a lot of concessions to be made, and not all of them made sense. However, Super Mario Maker for 3DS manages to still be engaging, rewarding, and a lot of fun to play – in isolation.
I don’t particularly enjoy strategy games. I don’t know what it is, but if a game requires just a little too much thinking, I have practically no desire to play it in my downtime. I’m a lazy casual I suppose. Though Planet Coaster… Planet Coaster did something to me. I played Theme Park and Theme Hospital as a kid. But at that time I had no concept of winning or losing in a video game – maybe I just never beat the first level.
Watch Dogs was an interesting new IP that came out in 2014. It took the Assassin’s Creed molded Ubisoft open-world formula, and set it in a modern day world with hacking as your tool in place of a hidden blade. It wasn’t perfect, the characters kind of sucked, but I enjoyed it.
Cities: Skylines was a game where I was fine playing a city-builder that didn’t have disasters in it, mainly because I, like many of us, destroyed our own cities simply by poor planning. But those wanting more out of the game were out of luck, as it simply wasn’t there. Natural Disasters adds a layer of complexity and challenge that while I don’t find it to be a necessary addition, it is a much welcomed one that makes Cities: Skylines feels more of a complete game than when it launched in early 2015.
Turtle Beach Elite Pro Tactical Audio Command (T.A.C.) is a mouthful to say, and by looking at the packaging, it is very much as technical as it sounds, but not as complicated. It is a necessary companion to the Turtle Beach Elite Pro headset, and will enhance any wired headset, but isn’t required. This control unit provides many improves to a standard headset, but gives you total control on the audio you deliver and receive. It also gives great visual feedback via its bright LED lighting system at just a glance regarding how you’re using it. Regardless of what you use it with, the TAC is an expensive add-on that works for your money.
Turtle Beach Elite Pro Tournament Gaming Headset is a stylish looking headset that is specifically aimed for professional gamers, streamers, and those deemed hardcore more than the everyday gamer. Though this headset shouldn’t exclude the everyday gamer who wants top-tier audio in a quality headset – just know there’s a hefty price tag associated with the great audio you’ll be getting in return. Turtle Beach’s Elite Pro Tournament Gaming Headset is an expensive auditory experience that is incomparable with other headsets today.
Dishonored was a very big surprise hit for me. For a few reasons, one being that it totally came out of nowhere for me. The other, because playing through this multiple times lead me to coming away with two very different experiences. The first time I did more aggressive and killing, the second, sneaking and stealth. It was the first time I felt a game truly offered a different core experience depending on my playstyle. Does Dishonored 2 continue this feeling? Yes oh yes!
You cannot deny the impact that Infinity Ward had on first-person shooters and gaming as a whole in 2007. It’s been a good long while since I’ve played the campaign of Modern Warfare, and it surprisingly holds up even if the game is no longer considered modern, though the real-world landscape very much is. As it goes, “everything old is new again” which applies aptly with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered.
This year’s Call of Duty isn’t the best it has been on modern consoles, that is a slot reserved for Sledgehammer’s Advanced Warfare. Most disappointing of this modern run of Call of Duty games has been with Treyarch’s Black Ops III. But Infinity Ward had a lot to live up when they released Ghosts. It was anything but stellar, but now Infinity Ward returns to reach for the stars with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which brings the series forward not only in gameplay, but presentation as well. It shows that the series can be more than we’re used to, and introduces systems and mechanics I can only hope get expanded upon.
Sometimes ports or localizations of games hit markets anywhere from 1 to 2 years later from their original release. I think we might have a new record here, as Xanadu Next was originally released in 2005, so talk about a blast from the past. Now as a player that frequently goes back and visits old classic games, I know far too well some games don’t hold up really well upon revisiting them. So playing an 11 year old game, does Xanadu Next end up grabbing me, or is it something I wished stayed in the past?
Like its sister expansions before it, Rise of Iron follows the same path of focusing on a side story in the Destiny universe, further expanding the narrative surrounding the base game.
Infinite Air with Mark McMorris attempts to carve a path in the extreme sports genre, but falls terribly short. The graphical fidelity, open presentation, and style of control are all great ideas that logically should make for an equally great game. However, the final product just isn’t all the way there. Mark McMorris may not be a household name, and now after this game, will be the name you remember not for fondness, but rather for what it could be.
VR is at its best when it makes you forget you’re in it. There are many things a game can do to make you feel this way, but sometimes it’s the simplest things that make it the easiest. Sports Bar VR does a lot of “simple” things in such strong ways that it’s created the most immersive close-to-real-life PSVR experience yet.
Let’s not pretend that those in the gaming world have no knowledge of the Elder Scrolls series and the latest game they released in the long running franchise. Skyrim, when originally released back in 2011 was huge. I was overseas, lots of free time on my hands, and I had many adventures in this wonderful world. I’ll admit, it’s been awhile since I’ve returned, while it’s showing its age a bit more than some games, Skyrim Remastered does a few things to bring a better console experience than before and provide the ultimate edition for this generation of consoles.
Do you Ka-ma-ha-me-ha? Yes it’s the time once again for another Dragon Ball game. In a licensed franchise that seems to be going just as long as the show it’s created from, there seems to always be a game for both newcomers and old fans to jump back into the world of Dragon Ball. Xenoverse 2 has arrived on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 and it’s an improvement over the original, but by how much?
