Shovel Knight (XB1 & PS4) Review

May 13, 2015

You may be looking at the screen shots of this game thinking “Not another indie game using 8-bit art” but dismissing it like that is just hurting yourself. Yacht Club games nailed it with Shovel Knight. Invoking the style of the 2nd and 3rd generation of consoles (NES, SNES, Genesis), Shovel Knight brings you to the simpler yet harder days of gaming where levels were hard and graphics blocky.

Shovel Knight Review

Jun 26, 2014

You either are, or know someone who grew up around 8-bit gaming. There are memories you cherish, or stories you tell of playing your favorite games until all hours of the night. You’ll likely recall the nostalgia for the games Shovel Knight is so greatly inspired by.  Yacht Club Games does tell their own story, build their own world, and set their own rules for you to play in, creating new memories and stories to tell.

Shovel Knight is Yacht Club Games first game, in need of Kickstarting

Mar 15, 2013

Surprise! Yacht Club Games is kickstarting our first game!  Shovel Knight, found here:

Our first game is Shovel Knight, a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It’s a hot mashup of new and old that may remind you of Mega Man, Castlevania, or Dark Souls! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. Shovel Knight has come to this valley with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and save his lost beloved. He wields a ShovelBlade; a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly!

Former WayForward team launches Yacht Club Games

Mar 06, 2013

Sean Velasco, formerly of WayForward, announced that he and an unnumbered group of dudes have splintered and formed a new studio, Yacht Club Games. How luxurious. Their vision is clear, and they seem to be more ambitious and free than they were in the past with WayForward. I very much look forward to see what they do next (I’ll make sure I find out).

Here’s their introductory letter:

Hello World!

It’s with great excitement that we announce the formation of Yacht Club Games: a proudly independent game developer started in 2011 by Sean Velasco and a crew from WayForward. We are a fun-loving bunch of gaming geniuses who have dedicated our lives to video games ever since we saw our first pixels. However, our serious and solemn goal is to make really awesome games that fuse modern and retro game philosophies, and we have the pedigree to prove it! Our team is comprised of top talent that has worked on some amazing titles, including Contra 4, A Boy and His Blob, Thor: God of Thunder, Mighty Milky Way, BloodRayne: Betrayal, and most recently, Double Dragon Neon.

So what are we all about? While our team is synonymous with retro revivals, we want to share our original brand of personality! We want to create fun and challenging gameplay with concise and polished mechanics. We want to both tug at your heartstrings and delight you with levity and charm. We want to make games that you play together with friends and family. Most of all, we want to give everyone the same collective types of game experiences that have defined our generation. It’s such an exciting time to be a fan of games; the industry is experiencing a renaissance and creativity is flourishing. We are so, so excited to develop games that we love, in hopes that you love them too. Let’s make a splash!
