Salt and Sanctuary was released back in 2016 and was reviewed by yours truly here at Saving Content. Back then I enjoyed my time with the game on PS4 and gave it a solid 4 out of 5. There isn’t much to say about the Nintendo Switch port, it’s just a straight port. There is no new content for those who would like to play this game on Switch. The bonus here is that you can play on the go. I do recall the game being released for the PlayStation Vita as well, but with the Switch’s larger screen and the ability to dock in front of a TV, this would be my choice for on-the-go Salt and Sanctuary. Especially with the smooth 60fps the game runs at; I haven’t run into any hiccups in my playthrough.
It’s only been a year after the events of Yakuza 1 (or Kiwami) unfolded and Kazuma Kiryu finds himself back in Kamurocho. Of course, things get out of hand and Kiryu gets tangled up in more Yakuza drama.
Overcooked 2 is like that trusty little hole in the wall restaurant you always go to. You know the one, that special spot where they always serve great meals in a great atmosphere. The one you tell all your friends about and try to take them to. When they do come, you quickly get frustrated with each other because they decided washing a dish was more important than chopping some much-needed steak while your other friend is off in a corner throwing onions all over the place. You know, just another day at your local eatery.
Yakuza 6: The Song of Life marks an end to the tale of series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu. As sad as those words are to write, the sixth mainline title in this franchise leaves me with a gigantic grin on my face. Coming off the incredible Yakuza 0 and the first Yakuza remaster, Kiwami, Yakuza 6 is at a high point in the series popularity here in the states. Thankfully this latest entry in the series will continue that high as it gives fans more of what makes these titles great.
The Bridge Constructor series has been around for quite a while now, with each title basically taking the same formula and adding a new aesthetic or narrative wrapper around it. The very first title was basic enough in its premise. Get people across a bridge, onto an island, using a bridge you designed. The trick being that your bridge must be structurally sound enough to get them across without breaking. In the latest release of the series, the world of Valve’s Portal is mixed in. As an Aperture Science employee, you’re tasked with moving Aperture Science vehicles to an exit by crossing gaps and deadly traps. Adding in some of Portal’s characteristic humor and you have the makings of a fun time.
How many franchises can you name that have lasted as long as Dynasty Warriors? If you go by the number of mainline games to be released, there aren’t many to list. So with over 21 years under its belt and 8 mainline sequels before it, Omega Force and Koei-Tecmo are adding one more to their own Dynasty, Dynasty Warriors 9. With number 9 comes some changes to the formula that may entice some new players to pick it up while not alienating fans of the series.
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is more of the same that we’ve come to expect from the TT Games gang. It’s the quirky personality paired with the simple but fun gameplay. It’s the same formula used for years now, basic combat, environmental puzzles, huge casts of characters, co-op play, lots and lots of silly puns, utilizing character abilities to progress, and more. The game is like comfort food, you know what to expect and you know you’re going to enjoy it regardless.
Ed has played a smattering of games throughout the year. This was a busy year personally for him, with a day job and getting married, but he still made time to play games. Here’s his personal favorites in a very specific order from this year.
I’ve been building model kits for years and they’ve been an enjoyable way to pass the time on a less than busy day. Painting parts, gluing and building, then finally admiring my handiwork. In the world of plastic model kits, Revell is a huge name and they’ve always been able to cater to all different skill groups ever since their creation in 1945. With their new Halo Model Kits, they’ve been able to add the detail a fan wants with the ease of building that you’d come to expect from a SnapTite kit.
You don’t find many true-to-life racing games for Nintendo consoles. Many tend to fall into the arcade spectrum, let alone use any actual licensed cars. Gear.Club Unlimited brings a grounded racer to the Nintendo switch while still maintaining an arcade feel. But does that make this game any good? Is it any fun?
Harmonix, the fine folks who brought us some of our favorite rhythm games over the years, has a brand new title available on the Nintendo Switch. A cute family friendly rhythm game that brings the rhythm genre to its basics; a fun and easy one to hop into that the whole family can enjoy.
Forza Motorsport 7. I want to love thee, but you make it so hard. For one, there’s the same great Forza you’d expect. Amazing physics, deep customization, Fairly intelligent AI, all that’s there. Yet they stab themselves in the back with a loot box grind and a collection score that hinders the fun in playing the way you want.
Destiny had some growing pains when it first released. From light to currencies to content, the original Destiny had issues that a lot of people couldn’t ignore. I waded through all of that and came away having a blast with the game. It’s been a mainstay on my PS4 and you could easily find me on any random night just hovering around on my sparrow movin’ and shootin’. But now Destiny 2 is here to carry on the legacy. Is it hindered by the mistakes of the past or does Destiny 2 break free of it’s darkness and soar into the light?
Pull tight those racing gloves because NASCAR Heat returns to bring some white knuckle racing to consoles. Monster Games is back as developer on NASCAR Heat 2 and is published by 704 Games, formerly Dunesberry-Martin Racing. In a lot of ways, Heat 2 is a step forward for the series yet drops the ball hard. So NASCAR fan, should you shell out your hard earned money this year? Read on…
