Hipster Whale’s take on PAC-MAN with PAC-MAN 256 was an instant hit on mobile. The mobile version was free, but with ads. If you wanted extra currency, you could watch an ad, or you’d have to wait for a reward. PAC-MAN 256 eschews all of that to prove it’s a game that can stand without ad support. It is an endless runner (of sorts) that has you attempting to gain a high score while unlocking power-ups to ensure your place atop the leaderboard. It’s such a unique and exciting way to play, you’ll have a hard time stopping.
Deadlight is another in a long string of games that’s about the undead. While that might make some folks groan, Deadlight did things a bit different from a gameplay perspective to keep things fresh. Opting to go for more of a side scrolling style of gameplay akin to something like the classic “out of this world” it was a unique take if somewhat flawed and frustrating at times. We now see a return to the series with the Director’s Cut, which offers some refinements, but mostly more of the same.
It’s been an extremely long time coming for Mighty No. 9, and that in itself has been a battle all on its own. When a creator of Megaman comes out with a Kickstarter to create his own version of a “Mega Man” like experience, people were all on board and who could blame them? Finally Mighty No. 9 is going to come out to the public and backers will finally get to see a game they helped fund release. Is it truly as mighty as the name might imply though?
The PlayStation Vita is no stranger to some fantastic role playing games. It seems to be the handheld to go to when it comes to interesting and unique RPG experiences. One thing right off the bat, Grand Kingdom is quite different from any other RPG game I’ve played (which is a ton) and it offers an experience worth checking out, even if it’s bit intimidating from the start.
2014’s Space Run was a pleasant surprise when it released two years ago, almost to the day. Space Run Galaxy is tower defense, done differently. You are on a linear track and essentially need to hold out, protecting the cargo and your own ship by the time you reach the end, but do so fast and efficiently. You’ll be building defenses and offenses in real-time as you make your way from point A to point B. It’s a game that the core gameplay works well, but some of the additions introduced in Space Run Galaxy doesn’t have me sticking around as much as I’d like.
If there is one cartoon series that has had an impact the most with, and I hate using this term, millennials, it would be The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (TMNT) Series. From ages 5 – 35, the Turtles have been a pop culture icon since their debut at Mirage comics in 1984. The Turtles have had four successful movies, three separate hit cartoon series, two Michael Bay adaptations, one awful live action TV show, and a slew of video games. The Turtles have had a ton of hit video games and a few misses through the years and you’re here to find out if their latest game from Platinum Games and Activision, Mutants in Manhattan, is in that top tier of Turtle games.
SteamWorld Dig was a game that felt like it was too short, SteamWorld Heist is thankfully the opposite, and a game I want to spend all the time with. This game was first released on the Nintendo 3DS at the tail end last year, and I’m so glad it has made its way to platforms that can and does really put its beauty on display. SteamWorld Heist combines turn-based strategy, RPG, exploration, and even includes skill-based shots as part of its core gameplay to become one of the best games I’ve played this year.
The dead have returned (as they always do these days) and the summer fun is about to turn into the summer of death. The Dead Island franchise is one that holds a very special place in my gaming heart. When the first game released, I was overseas, away from family, and living in very unfavorable conditions. Gaming was one of the few things I had to hold into to keep some semblance of normality in my day to day life for that year. Dead Island release and when I was finally able to get a copy sent to my location, I dived right in. The reason I bring this up is because for me Dead Island was a solo experience. With no internet capabilities to play the game online with friends, even though the game was heavily touted as an experience to play with friends, I did so alone with the entire game, twice over even. I fell in love with Dead Island.
WASTED has the tagline of “A Post Apocalyptic Pub Crawl”, making it the most likely of scenarios of what humans would do, should a nuclear fallout happen. The double entendre that exists within its name is just great for this Fallout meets Borderlands roguelike. While some might run at merely seeing or hearing the word, I assure you it isn’t “one of those” games. WASTED is unique take on the genre, and is one that will have you going back to the cooler many times.
“War!”, says just one of many headlines that flooded the world as national powers entered the second world war in 1939. Now, Hearts of Iron IV‘s release date coincides with D-Day, where the U.S. deployed 160,000 troops onto the beaches of Normandy. Hearts of Iron IV respectfully allows you to take control of any country’s leader and take them through World War II, where success is achieved by outlasting your enemies and accumulating the most victory points when the war comes to a close. This has been one of the best strategy games that has a high learning curve like many Paradox games do, but with great, intuitive gameplay that is time well spent.
It’s hard not to mention DOOM when talking about a first person shooter today. Odd saying that as DOOM was once a game compared to all future released first person shooting games back in the 90’s and we might have a resurgence of that very same mentality now. Though before DOOM went back to its roots in 2016, we had Flying Wild Hog, getting in touch with their old school shooting in 2011. Hard Reset went back to a time where shooting was mostly just that and waves of enemies, yet also jumped forward to a setting far in the future of man versus robots. Hard Reset Redux is a refined and newly released version coming out on consoles containing both the core game and the expansion together in one new package. It’s it worth it? You bet your ass it is!
Whether you like remasters or not, they do offer for a chance for people to revisit their favorite games on new platforms, or allow newcomers to experience something they may have missed years ago. Dead Island is now among those games. They aren’t technical masterpieces, but they did offer something unique and memorable that’s being given another chance on current-generation consoles and even PCs. Dead Island Definitive Collection is absolutely worth the money, if you get past the bugs that plague this zombie-infested island getaway.
I try to keep up with all the latest and greatest videogames, It’s hard, but I try. Some people limit themselves to AAA games and big blockbusters, which is a shame because there is a ton of other smaller focused titles or games with bigger hearts then budgets that totally can win players over and surprise the hell out of them. Anima Gate of Memories is one of those games, with huge ambition and ideas, even if the production behind it can’t match the scope. Yet still, it’s a title that anyone who loves adventure/action games, should take notice.
HITMAN‘s episodic adventures continue with this third installment, in what I believe to be the best delivery of a game. Without being story-heavy, and full of cliffhangers, HITMAN is able to have distinct locations to visit and play around in to experience a level in its entirety. While I like Marrakesh as a location and standalone episode, I feel it lacks a personality that Sapienza so proudly displayed. Despite that though, Marrakesh is strategic playground for Agent 47, imparting his more tactical side at resolving his targets while still being immensely enjoyable.
It’s been a very long time since I played the original Odin Sphere. As one of the later PS2 games I had a chance to get my hands on, it was my first experience with Vanillaware and it would create a fan out of me from there on out. It featured a huge cast of characters to play as, a world in disaster, and a colorful treasure of visuals and combat. It had some issues, but it was extremely memorable and top tier title back on the PS2. A shame that it was only ever on one system, but now we have a PS4 and Vita remaster that offers refinements for both old players and new.
