Once known as Death to Spies 3: Ghosts of Moscow back in 2010, is now known as Alekhine’s Gun with Maximum Games picking up both developer and publishing duties. This is a stealth action game akin to IO Interactive’s Hitman: Blood Money, and I reference that game specifically because that’s what Alekhine’s Gun so closely resembles in both gameplay and visuals. Alekhine’s Gun is a good game buried by being a victim of long development and bad timing of release that doesn’t hold up to its contemporaries.
The VOID Surround Hybrid Stereo Gaming Headset with Dolby 7.1 USB Adapter is the newest headset in the VOID headset line-up from Corsair Gaming. Last year I reviewed the Corsair VOID Wireless Special Edition Yellowjacket, and really enjoyed the quality and delivery on PC and PlayStation 4. This headset is compatible with PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and even tablets and mobile devices. This makes the headset universally flexible to your audio needs, and can go anywhere you do. The VOID Surround Hybrid Stereo Gaming Headset from Corsair also sees many improvements from its wireless predecessor, and is all the better for it.
It’s February, and it’s still winter for the northern hemisphere. Colossal Order’s latest and second expansion for Cities: Skylines, titled Snowfall is something for long-time players of the game. Snowfall focuses on the effects of harsh winters and the demand on resources it has on the people who live in these climes. It’s an expansion that isn’t really necessary to the game, but really adds a nice challenge for those looking for something more difficult.
A block in creativity whether it be writing, art, or even music, can be enough to drive anyone mad. Layers of Fear from Bloober Team SA does a decent job at exploring mental illness with a horror backdrop. Layers of Fear is a unique, gorgeous, scare-a-minute thrillride that’ll have you on-edge the whole way through, but disappointingly lacks any kind of sophisticated scares, or with the type of finality where the player has actually learned something by the game’s conclusion.
PDP (Performance Designed Products) has been creating audio headsets for console generations. After being partnered with Xbox, they have made a fully wireless headset for the Xbox One that not only is hands-free, but also hassle free. With its modest price and visually striking look, the Afterglow AG 9 Premium Wireless Headset for Xbox One is an attractive steal.
Firewatch begins rather unexpectedly and delivers a sobering reality for the main character you play as, named Henry. In this moment, you’re given a tutorial without realizing it. This tutorial also allows you to choose certain elements of Henry’s backstory that will shape future conversations. Firewatch is multi-faceted, offering first-person movement and interactivity, adventures, mystery, and a full range of emotions for you and the characters to experience. Everything about Firewatch made it difficult to put away for any length of time, like a good book. Firewatch does really well to hold on to your interest from beginning to end, and has no intention of letting you go.
Rise of the Tomb Raider‘s first story-focused DLC, Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch. This $10 DLC takes you on a hallucinogenic ride of the supernatural. This add-on leaves the comfort zone of Rise of the Tomb Raider, by going for a horror-themed story that was once just a Russian folktale. It’s a neat diversion to what you’ll find from Rise of the Tomb Raider‘s base game, but doesn’t deliver on the promises it initially teases with.
I’m no stranger to the world of role playing games and the effect Mario has had on them. From the original Mario RPG on SNES to Sticker Star Story, there has been plenty of adventure to have with the little plumber who could. Ok so maybe Mario hasn’t had a huge overall effect on the genre, but he has been a staple in my gaming life for years and it’s great to see them take two different eras of Mario RPGs and smash them together in the ultimate paper jam.
Big rigs, CB radios, that song “Convoy”, and diesel – all what comes to mind when you think of trucking in the United States. SCS Software is back with American Truck Simulator, a companion to Euro Truck Simulator 2 whereby you drive trucks, manage your own company, and make deliveries to various real-world cities. The result is something that might reel in Americans to actually play this over the developer’s previous games, simply by title alone.
With probably one of the coolest game names and visual presentation in some time, comes AIPD. This is the Artificial Intelligence Police Department, and it’s a twin-stick shooter that does some interesting things, but doesn’t explore them to its fullest extent to take advantage of such a name. This is a highly engaging entry amongst other twin-stick shooters like it, and thankfully AIPD is just different enough to earn your attention.
Bombshell is published by 3D Realms, the first new IP in over ten years. This is not a Duke Nukem game – well, not anymore. This is Bombshell: a chaotic, explosive, blood-dripping, soundtrack powered by metal isometric shooter that is a sci-fi take on the action RPG. With the main character evoking a Furiosa of “Mad Max” vibe, you’d expect some depth to the character that just never goes beyond puddle deep. You might want to profess the heavens, “Hail to the Queen, baby!” – but that just isn’t the case here. Bombshell flounders in direction and execution, that should be better than it actually is.
Crystal Dynamics’ Rise of the Tomb Raider released late last year on the Xbox One, and the game has now made its way to PC. It’s functionally identical, but visually superior to that of its console counterpart. That may not surprise anyone, but this sequel surprises at nearly every turn with refined combat and improvements to the core gameplay that simply does everything right.
The Deadly Tower of Monsters answers the question you all didn’t know you wanted answered, “what if you could play though a movie with director’s commentary in real time?” Well, ACE Team has made that possible with The Deadly Tower of Monsters, a game set around a low budget 50s sci-fi film. Thankfully, unlike most campy low budget films, The Deadly Tower of Monsters is quite good.
While I could reference games like Risk of Rain, Titan Souls, or Shadow of the Colossus as the ones that came to mind while playing The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human, none of them come as close as Metroid. And even then, it is not an apt comparison. The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human by YCJY is something all its own. It combines fantastic gameplay through exploration and boss battles with teaching a subtle lesson about preservation and sustainability of the resources we have left on Earth.
BenQ and their partnership with Major League Gaming has had a cascading effect on all of their products, making their monitors designed for competitive-gaming. This isn’t bad, as the result of owning these gaming monitors results in superior performance and visual quality. The RL2455HM is touted as a “RTS Monitor”, providing benefits for games like Dota 2 and StarCraft II. While it does make everything on the screen shown with better visibility, this is a gaming monitor that does so much more than advertised, making it for a gem among other gaming monitors that do the same.
