TowerFall Ascension Review

Mar 07, 2014

TowerFall Ascension feels like a game ripped from a different time. From the pixelated art, to the sound, and even the 4:3 presentation. There was nothing like this game from the era it represents, but it fills the void in our modern hearts.

Infested Planet Review

Mar 04, 2014

Infected Planet is a squad-based, real-time strategy game with tower defense elements set in a universe similar to “Starship Troopers”, sans the camp and unfortunate lack of Casper Van Dien. The foreboding sense of being overwhelmed at any point is the great dynamic between the fast-paced action and strategic nature of suppressing the enemies spewing from their hives.

Chuck’s Challenge 3D Review

Feb 28, 2014

As a kid, Chip’s Challenge back on Windows 3.11, challenged me greatly. The spiritual successor, with the help of the game’s creator and now namesake to develop it, Chuck’s Challenge was funded on Kickstarter. Now, it’s here challenging me just like it’s predecessor did all those years ago.

Aqua Kitty – Milk Mine Defender Review

Feb 21, 2014

You know that it’s gotten bad when cats have to mine for milk in the depths of the ocean, despite their natural aversion to water. In the world of Aqua Kitty – Milk Mine Defender, things are just this grim. But given this sad circumstance, this is a game that permeates joy all around.

LocoCycle (PC) Review

Feb 18, 2014

LocoCycle is just as ridiculous as prior Twisted Pixel Games have been in the past, perhaps more ambitious than previous endeavors like Splosion Man and The Gunstringer. It also features a talking motorcycle. Is it as crazy as it sounds?

Probably Archery Review

Feb 13, 2014

Real-life archery is very difficult. It requires strength and many hours of practice to get right. Probably Archery is also very difficult in a virtual environment. Is this a problem? Probably.

Double Dragon: Neon (PC) Review

Feb 10, 2014

Double Dragon is an iconic beat’em up series. Would remaking it pixel for pixel evoke nostalgia for a replay? Would rebooting it piss off fans of the original? WayForward avoids the answers to those questions by re-imagining it by both catering to fans of the old games and creating something new with the existing characters in a refreshing, yet retro way.

Jazzpunk Review

Feb 10, 2014

Doing comedy in video games is hard, it’s not seen too often. Focusing a game squarely around comedy, thats incredibly hard and almost unheard of. After playing through Jazzpunk, from Necrophone Games, I can safely say that it can be done. Jazzpunk is hilarious and dare I say, one of the funniest games I’ve played in quite a while.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch Review

Feb 03, 2014

University student project, Octodad, back in 2010. It garnered a lot of attention and was a freeware success. In 2011, a Kickstarter for Octodad 2 was formed to help fund a proper sequel, which was successful on its own terms (and not like Double Fine numbers). And here we are, Octodad: Dadliest Catch is the renamed, completed project of Octodad 2. Is it truly a catch, or should you throw it back?

Europa Universalis IV: Conquest of Paradise Review

Jan 31, 2014

Europa Universalis IV’s latest DLC, Conquest of Paradise mixes up the core gameplay by injecting some randomization that gives an ahistorical premise to the world. The expansion focuses less on Europe, and more on the expansion to the West. The New World gives more to do in an already busy game.

METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE (PC) Review

Jan 16, 2014

After almost a year since the original release, comes the PC version of METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE from Platinum Games. Platinum has done was Platinum does, and made a fast, frenetic game with high replayability. And the game alone warrants a double-dip on PC, or your first-time purchase.

Europa Universalis IV Review

Nov 22, 2013

As someone relatively new to Paradox strategy titles, Europa Universalis IV thoroughly challenged me. I can say that while the learning curve is extremely high, there’s a want to keep trying. And try I did, and much of anything, spending more time with the game allowed me a better understanding of the core mechanics, but not after watching YouTube Let’s Plays and looking at Wiki’s.

Slender: The Arrival Review

Nov 22, 2013

The Slender Man tale is fairly well known at this point with its explosion of fans on the Internet. First came the story in 2009 by a member of the Something Awful forums, then eventually came the videogame adaptation with “Slender: The Eight Pages”. When it was released, it was a free PC game created by Indie developer Parsec Productions, the premise was simple, find eight notes hidden around a large forest in pitch black with nothing but a flashlight. The more pages you aquired, the more likely the sharp dressed faceless Slender Man would show. Stare at him long enough or if he gets too close and it is game over.

Deadfall Adventures Review

Nov 13, 2013

Stop me if you’ve heard this before, you play as a plucky anti-hero whose family contains a long line of explorers, and you reluctantly and begrudgingly join up in this expedition for the cause of money, and pretty woman.

Battle Worlds: Kronos Review

Nov 11, 2013

King Art Games, a German developer known for The Book of Unwritten Tales has created a successful game, two-fold. One part is their overfunded Kickstarter. The other, is the incredibly well-designed and fun-to-play, Battle Worlds: Kronos that is a hex-grid, turn-based strategy game as few do well.
