Trivia games have always had a hard time on consoles, they usually end up getting bundled with some sort of gimmick controller that’ll hook a few people but leave other feeling awkward holding one. The Jackbox Party Pack needs no pack in controllers and makes the whole package worthwhile for the price. The best part? Controllers that are in your pocket, you might even be reading this review on one right now.
Emergency 5 is easily the best and most refined game the series has ever seen, and also one of the more unique RTS titles to exist for the genre. Developer Sixteen Tons is able to craft a lengthy campaign filled with similar objectives, but done in a way that are both thrilling and fun to play. But sadly the game suffers from performance problems that interrupt what would otherwise be a great game.
Aqua Kitty – Milk Mine Defender DX is not much different than the Steam release, sans the “DX” in the title. But it does include features from that version and more for the PlayStation systems, where the PS4 version benefits the most, but the PSVita is great as well. This Defender clone is in a league all its own, 30,000 leagues even.
It’s no surprise that games on the next-generation of consoles are bigger. Ranging from 10 to 50GB, this can eat up a lot of space, and after a year since the PlayStation 4’s release, might be just about gone. Other World Computing has an all-in-one solution that will give you more space, all the tools you need, instructions on how to do, and a small increase in performance. It’s the do-it-yourself drive upgrade bundle. It comes in many flavors: 1.0TB SSD, 1.0TB, 1.5TB, and 2.0TB.
I love motocross games. I love the ones that let you perform tricks, the ones that let you race, and the ones that let you do both. Examples of my favorites include Motocross Madness and the MX vs ATV series. What I don’t love, is MXGP: The Official Motocross Videogame. The technical racing is the highlight, but is marred by everything else around it to be an uninspired racing game. This is a problem when motocross is an extreme sport, there’s nothing extreme about this – Well, maybe extreme boredom.
The “Simulator” genre has gotten quite crowded over the years with some strange ideas, yet one of the better made and true to form has always been the Farming Simulator series. For as silly as it sounds to those who take Agricultural work for granted, Farming Simulator is actually pretty competent.
Brandishing the reinvigorated Sierra brand, which is a digital-only publisher under the umbrella of Activision, comes Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions. Lucid Games, (comprised of developers at the now-defunct Bizarre Creations, the development house that birthed the original Geometry Wars) is under some pressure to deliver a worthy successor, after a 6-year hiatus for the series. And on all fronts Lucid Games succeeds in doing that, even introducing a campaign of sorts, that gives level-to-level challenges beyond getting the highest score (even though you’re still doing that). “Retro Evolved” would be fitting for a subtitle here, more so than any game in the series’ history.
The Blue Flamingo might not be the fastest, most complex shoot’em up out there, but it is the most unique to play, and is a delight to look at. It probably isn’t best played in long sessions, but rather taken in small chunks at a time. That said, it is worth whatever time you’re willing to give it.
Wrestling games in the past have failed to capture the ebb and flow of a match that you see on television. It’s a difficult balance to have – and for the most part, WWE 2K15 gets it right. There’s some missteps that happen along the way, but for fans of wrestling, but WWE in particular, there’s some great steps in the right direction to deliver an authentic experience to its real-life counterpart.
Identical to last year’s release on older consoles in terms of story, the simply titled Grand Theft Auto V is reworked to utilize the power of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Without so much as a “HD” or “Remastered” on the box, there’s nothing to suggest anything is different with this release. And for the most part that is true, as you’ll be replaying the same story, but in such a way that it won’t feel the same – especially when that is done from the first-person perspective.
Insomniac Games are well known for many classic games. Most of them are incredibly lighthearted and fun. Some are quite boring and duds, but we don’t have to talk about Overstrike. Where most open-world action games these days are pretty dark, gritty, and somewhat realistic, Insomniac introduces us to a city that is bright, colorful, and over the top. It just so happens to be over run with mutated monsters, hell bent on drinking more Of the energy drink that turned them into monsters anyway. Sunset Overdrive is quite a breath of fresh air on the Xbox One, there aren’t any of its kind that I can think of released within the console’s first year that comes close to the highly stylized world of Sunset City.
Sledgehammer Games’ first entry in the Call of Duty franchise is the freshest that the series has been in quite some time. It shows that even the every-other-year trade-off between Infinity Ward and Treyarch has caused some burnout. With a new pair of eyes looking at the series, many changes have been made – and all for the better.
Charles Caleb Colton wrote, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”. In many games, imitation can be a crutch to make itself recognizable but completely unmemorable. While Lords Of The Fallen has enough of it’s own personality to differentiate itself, comparisons will be made to BANDAI NAMCO’s other published title, Dark Souls. And that’s not a bad thing.
Democracy 3: Clones & Drones takes a futuristic approach, while also making the late game much more challenging by giving you more things to do, other than resting on your laurels, as the base Democracy 3 would often evolve into a utopia near the end.
The F1 series from Codemasters is annualized for good reason. Each year, FIA Formula One introduces new technologies, and makes interesting changes. Instead of Codemasters being the ones making changes and creating new gameplay mechanics to serve a yearly game (i.e. Madden NFL), the gameplay is served by the changes to the racing it is based on. And for this, the series greatest strength is from the sport itself.
